You know how 3D mark scores are usually used to compare systems that are similar to see which one is better optimized and also to compare system to see how significantly faster one part is. But I wonder, how can you use 3D mark to judge to see what kind of games you should be able to play in the future. There is no chart saying (Scores between 5000-7000 can play these games smoothly) or if you get a score above 20K for example, you should be able to play games well into 2006 or 2007. It just seems like all the program can be used for is for comparing other systems but not a good tool to see how much longer you system will last for.

If you knew what future games were going to look like, and how demanding they were going to be... they wouldn't be 'future' games anymore, now would they? Almost by definition, it's impossible to tell how both video software and hardware are going to change more than 6-12 months down the line. When the hardware stops doubling in effective speed every 18-24 months, maybe it will be possible to make accurate longer-range predictions.

Well what about programs like 3DMark 2001. They could use predictions or calculations that would say if you got a certain score in 2001, you can run these games on a particular computer. If you get these scores, you can play these games and if you get this score you can play all games...

Well for one thing, 3DM01 is a different kind of test than 03 or 05.

01 is basically a computer benchmark, 03 and 05 are vid card benchmarks.
