3d Freelancer Models

So why do you have that stupid ass scrolling image? What in the world compelled you to not just put regular jpegs on there that we can look at leisurely? Neither you nor your son has any taste or artistic ability.

Maybe I need to raise an asshole flag?

DurocShark, they're excellent, see if Maya has student licenses or something. 🙂

Didn't think about that. Good idea Aga...

As for the scrolling image... Hey, he's 14. Sheesh. I'll bet he likes the <BLINK> tag too! 😛

They're in GMAX format. He hasn't figured out how to get them in to 3ds or anything yet. (I can't see in GMAX how to export to a different format.)

Anybody have any leads on good and free rendering packages? I'd love to give him Maya but that's $$$$$$xinfinity.

there is a free student version of maya, it has watermarks but is otherwise the same as the retail

Edit: Its called Maya Personal Learning Edition

DurocShark, here's Maya Personal Learning Edition, which is supposed to have almost all the features of Maya 6. Enjoy. 🙂

Did you consider that he's not the one that runs the site and may not necessarily be the one that put the three images into an annoying, scrolling single image? Maybe the people who run the website did it. As said in the first thread about this, Duroc's son was approached to do models for these people.

Great learning program, but the one thing I hate about it is the small renders and the "Maya Personal Learning Edition: Not for Comercial Use" banner that streaks across all the renders.

Maya has student licences but they're still crazy expensive ($800 for complete, I think). PLE is free but watermarks all the renders, and like gmax, can't do much it terms of exporting.

best buy for a serious package is the basic version of XSI. $500 for anyone, I bet you could find a scholastic discount to make it even better. I believe alot of the HL2 stuff was done in XSI. There'll be a steep learning curve jumping from gmax though.

They used to have the watermark even in the wireframes, so it's gotten better...

If you really want to go the free route, look up what's on the software discs of old 3dworld magizines, then see if you can find that issue (either order from 3dworld, or ebay, or post on a 3d forum that you're looking for issue XX and can paypal, etc.) Alot of times the disc will include a free, full functioning older version of a piece of software, along with a demo and discount offer for the new version.

The heavy hitters (maya, max, XSI) don't go that route, but I know I've seen full versions of truespace, bryce, and poser on those discs.

LOL!

He doesn't do Linux yet, but he's expressed an interest. Especially when I'm mucking with my Debian box...

You'd be amazed at what little kids are churning out these days. I've seen some pretty impressive website designs.

Most serious 3d work is done in linux, but it's all the big-time costly animation packages (maya/xsi)

I remember hearing about an open source 3d project some time ago...but I can't recall the name. It was supposed to be pretty paltry in comparison to what you could do with cheap pay software (bryce/poser).

I know you're looking for free, but since student pricing is an option for you, the difference between what you can do for a few hundred dollars for the student version and what you can do for free is pretty huge. If he's really into it, I think it'd be something to consider. The other bonus is that if you've had student licences for a few years, many companies will give you a good deal on an upgrade to a professional license.

I glanced at some student pricing, better than I originally thought:

Maya complete: $290
3d max: $650 or $150 for a 1 yr temp lic.
xsi: $250

if he doesn't need animation controls, Rhino is a steal at $150, but really needs an third party renderer to produce decent images.
