Sony is making a big push into 3D with 3D HDTVs, 3D capable Blu-ray players, and an update to the Playstation 3 to support 3D games and Blu-ray disks. We knew that 3D for the Playstation 3 was coming this year but we just didn't know when. Now we've learned that Sony is planning to release the software update this summer alongside the release of the 3D capable Sony Bravia HDTVs that will enable 3D gaming.

In an interview with Pocket-lint, Sony's John Koller says that 3D game titles will be announced separately but, "we think that 3D stereoscopic gaming has a ton of potential, particularly in placing consumers within the actual experience."

Support for 3D Blu-ray movies will come in a separate update with no announced release date.

While I'm not sure how well it will work (glasses required?) it's a push in the right direction. It'll be interesting to see how it ends up.

I'm not sold on 3D just yet. Avatar looked amazing but it still feels extremely gimmicky.

I agree with mmntech, 3D seems VERY gimmicky to me. Apart from Avatar, I can honestly say there isn't one 3D experience I have enjoyed.

I love my PS3 but if 3d requires glasses this equals a huge fail.

Why won't they give mkv support? 3d has to be way more complicated.

3d is also a gimmick IMHO on most movies because they have gags like something coming at your face fast. Avatar was great because it did not do any of those gimmicks or gags, it was just 3d and looked amazing.

Yep, 3D glasses will be required. They showed it off at CES with Gran Turismo and other games. It worked OK but it also seemed to dim the brightness of the games.

Licensing issues with studios. mkv = piracy...yarrrr

Let's see. Project Natal or PS3D. I can either flail my body around my apartment or look like I'm blind, or both. Either way Kudo Tsunoda comes to mind. I'll pass.

I don't see a problem with it, or requiring glasses. It'll just be an option for you from the sounds of it, so if you don't want to use the glasses then don't... and you still play the game fine.

Also note that since the PS3 is using an HDMI 1.3 connection, 3D will be limited to 1080i.
Source? I'm not necessarily disbelieving this, but I've seen it bandied about enough that I'd like to see what authority is saying that.

I dont want 3d ps3 or 3d TV. Im one of the millions of people that suffer from motion sickness and anything 3d is a nightmare for us.

Well a good hint is HDMI 1.3 simply doesn't have the bandwidth to support 1080p. You'll need HDMI 1.4 for a the full 1080p.

There were like 2 scenes in avatar that actually made me go "Wow, 3D!" The rest was either unexciting or gimmicky. Seriously how many times to I need to see those white things floating through the air in 3D?

I thought the 3 minute preview for the Hubble IMAX was more impressive than all of Avatar from a 3D perspective.
