As you can see by my 'name' I am interested in 3D cameras and 3D 'everything'..(3d HDTV, 3D glasses).
I have been asked a few times is 3D cameras going to replace the good old family, point and shoot, digital cameras (they can take 2D pictures too), or are they just a passing gadget thing ?

I think that since the 3D displays are being the new standard.. 3D Televisions and 3D monitors.. there will be a real need for 3D cameras.

If Facebook will allow 3D view like Youtube, it will make the 3D cameras stay a little bit longer.

The only thing that 3D TVs might do is drive up resolutions for better stereo vision. Other than that, it is a total waste of money. Atleast we might get pcxels out of it down the road.

I annd many others seek out 2D movie theaters to see movies sold as 3D. I ahte hte 3D experience. It adds nothing. A movie with a shitty plot in 3D is still a movie with a shitty plot.

Having ranted. The in home use things might be the second good use of 3D cameras. Having things in 3D kidna make sense.

The camera that is coming out though (Sony $1500) has the lenses close together. They should be closer to normal eye width appart but I'm sure the sales dept at Sony wants a comapct (irrational engineering decision) design. So, when they actually do it right, then it might make sense.

for 3D to become a new standard, it should make appeal to simplicity

Sony is missing out the 3D. But is selling more..
Sony sells cameras today as "3D" while they have one lens, and can shoot only 3D in a panoramic sideways clip, stitching the images together as 3D.
Fuji W3 3D camera, has two lenses wide apart, like the human eyes, and can take real 3D images.

When the first '3D TV without glasses' will arrive then the 3D may really catch up.
