i'm undecided between either a dell powerconnect switch or a 3com switch. i am looking for an unmanaged, 24port, gigabit preferably. also, please leave a statement regarding to why you chose that product.

Are you just going to be using this around the house? Chances are both switches will perform about the same. I've had experiences at LAN parties with various brands of switches, and they all worked fairly well.

yeah, it will be used mainly in my home network. i might base my decision on the better value though.

has 3com been in the networking bussiness longer than dell?

Just about any brand will work fairly well. Dell probably doesn't make their own networking equipment and it's probably rebadged something. What's the cheapest?

Get whichever is cheaper. I have used many switches from both and have never had a problem with any of them.

i rather have 3Com switch, becuase they been in the industry for a long time.

here are some other reason too
3COM has some 10G core & edge switches & routers. Many new products are being launch & develop for a complete solution. Very very competitive pricing (compare to Cisco). I have seem some of their products. Very Impressive so far.

3COM has Re-Entered the Enterprise market about 2 years ago with the Huawei JV. I have seem their Product Road Map (3COM is here to stay), Lots of New Exciting Products, Strong Balance Sheet ($1.3 Billion in Cash, No Debt ), Great Products & Customer Service.

Leaning toward 3Com Enterprise products

3COM Product

Seriously for an unmanaged switch get whichever one is cheaper. They will both work equally. I doubt you'll see a big difference in peformance between the two.

Now if you were talking managed switches then I wouldn't even consider those two. I would stick with Cisco for that.

Note dell 2XXX series gigabit switches do NOT support Jumbo frames. This is a BIG turn off for many. Gigabit without Jumbo Frames is really not that much of an improvement over 10/100. IF you are goind gigabit, get a switch with jumbo frames.
