First post so bear with me. I was shopping at a Best Buy near Chicago and saw they had the 3com 10Mbps home phoneline USB adapter kits (2 USB adapters per kit) on clearance for $49.50. I bought both kits they had. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me since I think these go for over $100 normally. Note: the box says nothing about Win2K compatability but there's a driver on the CD for it and it works perfectly. I'm very happy with these little adapters.

HAHA I wired up my house with Cat 5 its easy. Just cut a bunch of holes in the walls and buy bunch of faceplates, adapters, and cat5 cable. Then wire up cat5 all around the attic walls etc. Then I have a hub in the attic where it is all wired up. Also Got one speical line where it is uplink from my DSL/Router.

yeah... wiring just takes a LOT of patience.
not that bad though. or you can pay an electrician about $200 a run (that is what my dad did)

We may be disgning a new home, actually a major rehab, and I was toying with the idea of running cat5. However me thinks that in 18 months there wil be some very dependable and inexpenssive wireless options available.

If I can wait 18 months..

A lot of new homes I looked at recently have Cat 5 instead of phone wire for all phone jacks. Then they have an option for a "technology center" where they give you a built-in desk somewhere in the middle of the house with an ethernet hub to tie it all together and charge $5000 to $10000 for it.

The house I ended up buying is a few years old and it doesn't have any Cat 5, but crawl up in the attic and peek under the insulation and you'll find that it's a snap to drill down through the top of walls and snake cable to an outlet box.

I think I wouldn't put the hub/switch in the attic though - it can get damn hot up there. A closet would be a better idea.

I did the same thing one afternoon. I found these modular faceplates that have a phone/RJ45/Coax (for cable tv) all on one. Looks pretty cool too :)
