3COM NIC dies on motherboard?? Should I be worried?

I have an ASUS A7N8X mother board, with a 3com NIC and an NVIDIA ethernet card, I've always used the 3com but this morning it's saying that there is no cable plugged in, when if I plug it into the NVIDIA port it reads it as being plugged in, but is barely able to connect to the internet.

I'm going to buy another NIC hoping that will fix it, assuming that this is a hardware failure, should I be worried that my net ports are dying / died on my motherboard? Or could it be a virus? The internet will run at somewhat moderate speed for about 2 minutes after restart, and then just stops all together when plugged into the NVIDIA port.
