I would like to get ppl feedbacks who have used their new Enterprise products. thx

3COM has some 10G core & edge switches & routers. Many new products are being launch & develop for a complete solution. Very very competitive pricing (compare to Cisco). I have seem some of their products. Very Impressive so far.

3COM has Re-Entered the Enterprise market about 2 years ago with the Huawei JV. I have seem their Product Road Map (3COM is here to stay), Lots of New Exciting Products, Strong Balance Sheet ($1.3 Billion in Cash, No Debt ), Great Products & Customer Service.

Leaning toward 3Com Enterprise products

avoid like the plague.

3com has never been nor ever will be an enterprise player.

foundry, extreme, cisco, enterasys are the 10G players. Speak to Gartner if you need more info.

-edit- editted for you edit. :)

not many people here even remember 3com.

They've been dead in the enterprise for quite sometime, around 6 years.

..... and those of us that DO remember recall how 3COM made a sudden announcement that they were getting OUT of the Enterprise market because they just couldn't compete.

They left great many customers high-and-dry, dismissed most of their support staff, and totally rolled over on damned near everyone that used to support them as a company.

They, as an Enterprise hardware producer, couldn't possibly suck anymore than they already do.

(IMHO)

abt 4 years, but 3COM is back for real this time with their JV with Huawei. Everything is engineered & manufactured in China. very low cost = great product = greater saving to end user. good for us!

3COM has a heavily-tarnished name in the enterprise, beyond their NIC's. They have a huge uphill battle ahead of them. Their support was fairly bad last time - I can hardly wait to see how it is when their escalatoin techs have to talk to a developer in China to work on a bug!

Hi
alphnasx

Would it be possible for you to make a statement concerning your connection to 3com (or any affiliate of 3com), and your motivation for this thread?

well given that it is such a large investment I suggest you contact Gartner or Metagroup.

The small price for the call and information will be invaluable.

That and avoid 3com at any and all costs.

you should be looking at cisco, foundry, extreme, enterays, nortel

foundry - no opinion
extreme - they are 3com product, they bought their product line, a few years back
enterays - no way jose!!
nortel - no opinion

juniper - expensive like cisco
3Com - top to bottom product line & continuely filling in all little gaps with new products. very good pricing & service so far. we have use some of 3com products b4, good results.

Cisco is the same price as everybody else if you negotiate well. Have you setup a call with Gartner?

I worked at Honda of Canada on contract, and they HAD been strictly 3Com, due to the service they received. However, 3Com pulled the plug on support, out of the blue, on all their existing contracts and products. Needless to say, Honda IT magmt was NTO impressed with this, and by the end of the week, Cisco was moving in and setting up shop.

After that experience, I will NEVER recommend 3Com for any type of network, whether it be enterprise, or a single user in his house.

If you knew the history behind 3com you'd understand. they literaly left their customers hanging because they couldn't cut it. I am far from bashing manufacturers and will not stoop to "such and such rules all else sucks" kind of banter. Of course jumiper is kicking Cisco butt, they make a strong product with a lot of history and tons of support.

But I mean really, this is 3com we're talking about. When making this kind of investment you need support and know that the company will be there a few years from now. Please, please see what Gartner has to say about them as I recently went through a similar analysis. 3com is really not even on the 4 quadrant analysis.

I'll pull up the file tomorrow to check, but seriously I wish you the best with this. If were talking a small network of under a million you may be able to get by, over that...well...good luck. Just so you know I had a few friends fired over picking 3com after the big fiasco - kinda like the guys who got fired for picking linux for a desktop midway through implementation.

I personally think everything 3com makes besides their NIC's is crap.

However, there are several counties in central TX that use 3com gear for their VoIP stuff, and to my knowledge they haven't had any problems with it. I'm not endorsing 3com, just thought I'd throw that bit of knowledge out there. I know nothing about the planning that went into the network, only that the network administrator had tons of prior experience with 3com, and she liked them, and the decision was hers to make. Regardless of it being a wise decision or not, they haven't had any problems that I'm aware of.

On another note, I was saddened recently to hear that 3com is acquiring TippingPoint, who has a damn fine intrusion prevention product by the way...probably one of the top three in the market. Stupid Cisco...if they'd acquired them, they'd be positioned well in that market against Juniper, ISS and the other big players. TP's product will go to crap under 3com's leadership, I'd bet money on it.
