I guess people didn't buy the whole "gaming modem" ploy ;)

I live out here in the middle of the country, no DSL, Cable, ISDN, or even clean dialup connections. For these reasons, I need a quality controller-based PCI modem.

Any suggestions?

Actually, from at least two reviews I remember reading, that modem had great performance and low pings even under mediocre line conditions.

Back in the days of dial-up (for me ;)), I had both a USR ISA hardware modem, and the 3Com Internet Gaming modem.

And I can safely say that the 3Com IGM was better for gaming. No, I didn't get large ping differences, but the modem was much more "consistant" (for lack of a better term).

Hey, I'm just stating my experiences. Discount it however you will.

Don't be so quick to believe everything you read on a review site. For all you know, they used the thing for less than 2 hours and called it good.

No big deal. Any old dirt cheap Lucent LT winmodem always offered similar performance.

"Anyone have any ideas for other good controller based PCI modems? "

3COm/USR 2976 and 2977 are nice HW based PCI Modems. I use a 2976 myself as do a number of friends and clients.

Thorin: He has the right to spell out the facts. You're on of the people that will never accept the truth that a winmodem based on a lucent chipset will perform equally or better than hardware one in most cases.

My point was that no one asked or mentioned WinModem yet Modus can never help but get his little winmodem plug in.

And I have in the past agreed openly that they may perform equally under optimal conditions (line noise, etc...). But you are right I still don't believe that they can outperform a hardware based modem.

Thorin,

<<My point was that no one asked or mentioned WinModem yet Modus can never help but get his little winmodem plug in.>>

A helpful person does not answer some one's exact question like a robot. Instead, he will point him in the direction that will best solve his problem.

Stealth1024's real problem is not that he needs a hardware modem, but that he needs a GOOD modem. And since it was been long ago established that a dirt cheap HCF winmodem from Conexant or Lucent will perform just as well as any hardware modem in the vast majority of circumstances, suggesting such a modem is the best solution to Stealth's real problem, and a thrifty solution at that.

<<And I have in the past agreed openly that they may perform equally>>

And since they do (at such an insanely cheap price) they represent the best choice for 56k connectivity.

Alright, lets get more specific. What are your opinions on the USR 56K V.90 Performance Pro PCI Modem?

And finally, will I suffer any performance hit by setting up an old bare-bones Pentium 120 computer (install the new modem in this computer instead of the new one) on a network to act as an Internet sharing/Print Server computer? There are three other computers which would be connected via switch. I plan on using the built-in Win98 Internet Sharing (which I use now between two computers) but other suggestions would be helpful.
