The 3Com Embedded Firewall is a hardware-based firewall that works with 3Com 10/100 Secure Network Interface Cards to provide security function at network end points, meaning servers and desktops. Had a glimpse of it Neowin as well, looks pretty cool.

Technically though, how would a layer 2 device be able to perform firewall features? I guess it would have to have embedded higher level layers operating on the NIC as well.

Any ideas?
