3com 3C920 integrated NIC in a Dell

I just did a comparison between the integrated NIC controller(3C920) and a 3com 3C905B and the 3C905B blows the 3C920 away. Is there some special non-default settings that the 3C920 needs in order to perform on par with the 3C905B? I've got 2 dell systems here ( a P4 1.4 and a P3 1.0) that use the 3C920 NIC controller. All's I can find on 3com's sight is a press release saying ASUS is using the controller.

In the NIC properties box, compare the settings for flow control, offload, 802.1p and/or 802.1q (both 802.X should be disabled).

The flow control simulates collisions to reduce inbound traffic under load, for a small LAN, set it off. Offload affects some systems more or less than others, play with the setting and decide which is giving you higher performance.

Of course, check speed & duplex, make sure they're the same, and verify that the hub/switch is accepting the settings. "Auto-Config" is a load of crap, and usually causes more problems than it solves (IMHO). It's very possible that the NIC is set for 100/full, but the hub/switch is set for 100/half, and you're getting alot of collisions (or something in the system thinks you are).

FWIW
