I just installed the above mentioned network card and my boot time in win98SE went from 20 seconds to 3 minutes?? What the heck?

I assume it's some kind of network status checking program but I cannot find anything to remove/disable. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have DHCP enabled? If your card is on a network without a DHCP server (or not on a network at all), boot time will lag as the card tries to get an IP address. Try putting in a static address like 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Thank you for your replies.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to networking so pardon my ignorance. Ladi you are correct in assuming I have no network yet (the plan is to add my new computer to my old one, but first I needed to test so the NIC was working and then I need to get a router/switcher.

Given all this I tried to disable DHCP but I admit I do not even know where to start. I used "3COM Doctor" that comes on the disk but could not find anything there.

From the support page suggested by daveaudio I gather 3COM cards are finicky? Should I try to get another NIC instead?

Thanks again

Go to network properties (right-click Network Neighborhood>Properties), select TCP/IP, click properties.

That did help a lot. The boot is still however a good 20-30 seconds slower than without the NICcard.. Is that the price I have to pay to have a NIC? ;)

Furthermore do I have to get to the network "password screen" before I can 'enter' win98?
It no big deal just slightly annoying. :)

If you are tired of replying I would understand... You have been very helpful.

Thank you
