OS: Windows XP Pro SP1 (no other updates yet)
Hardware:
Integrated:
Inspiron 3500 Laptop
Celeron 333@330MHZ
256MB SDRAM PC133@PC66
4.5 GB Fujitsu HD
NeoMagic 256AV Graphics Card
NeoMagic Sound
Lucent Winmodem
13.1" TFT LCD
Hot Swapable Floppy + 24x Toshiba CDROM
1xLIon Battery
1xUSB1.1 port
External:
PCMCIA 3com 10/100 NIC
3com 3c420 USB HPNA Adapter
Problem:
I just clean installed windows XP pro w/ sp1 integrated.
The computer works with every piece of hardware, except the 3c420 USB adapter...
It works fine when the 3c420 is plugged into the USB, but NOT hooked into the network using the internet.
It gets a blue screen almost instantly the second network traffic starts after plugging in the phoneline to the network.
Now this isnt related to being a problem with my specific computer. Ive tried this on several Windows XP machines only to get blue screens.
The blue screen on this one is "Bad_Pool_Caller" (where as on the other ones it was "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL")...
The drivers provided on the official CD work fine with windows 98, ME and 2000 (ive tried the USB thing on the laptop with windows 2000...worked well). They give me the blue screen with windows XP. These drivers are not WHQL certified.
Most drivers you will find on the net are in a file called 3c420.exe, which are the 3com drivers ive used.
I found this one driver at driver guide, which have WHQL certification...located here http://www.network-drivers.com/drivers/34/34142.htm. These drivers are the current ones installed for the unit.
Drivers install fine, and windows says the hardware is fine, but i cant use the internet without the blue screen coming up, causing the computer to shutdown.
Edit: There is no USB hub being used to connect the unit to the computer. The unit is plugged directly into the lone USB port on the side of the laptop. Besides, there is a big yellow sticker on the unit saying NOT to connect it to a USB hub.
