I thought mkv was just a container format, meaning that the video would play depending on what codec was being used.

If you want real HD playback, you need the newer 9400m-based Mini.

the question is more related to 1080p content, and amdhunter, it should be able to play it just fine. Those minis have core 3 Duos in them. Would make for a nice small and quiet htpc.

Yes. Mplayer now has mult-threaded versions that work well for this.

Plex has also been optimized to work with multiple cores and plays 1080p content just fine (high bitrates too). I think Plex also uses mencoder for decoding.

Always been tempted to try out the OS....seems like a good time to give it a test run. I would think it would be easy to resell this for the after-rebate price and still break even if I decide.

Is it worth getting this over the new mini? There's a $180 difference for the newer graphics and cpu. According to SD, both systems will have Leopard and iLife '09.

Or is the point that this is the cheapest non-used way to get introduced to OSX in a fully legal way?

I have a Dell Mini that I've installed OSX so that I can start programming iPhone apps, but am tempted to get a proper Mac.

Sold out online...call your local store for availability. We'll see if they add more stock before the rebate expires.

Good to know!

Plex has been the most efficient 1080p player I've ever used, on any platform. Totally kills VLC on my Mac!
