I just do not understand this resolution / aspect ratio. Why would someone prefer this as a computer monitor over a 27 inch 16x9 monitor with 2560x1440 resolution. The 27 inch has a higher surface area and higher resolution.

Here is a visual aide

At 1st glance it does look somewhat strange to me also. The xtra width does have it's pluses tho if your using multiple apps doing cutting and pasting, etc.

Would this resolution not be better for those who watch a lot of widescreen HD movies on a PC? Seems like there would be less black bar at the top and bottom if any at all.

The only two things I can think of are movies or an eyefinity like effect without bezels and easier to run on your GPU than 1440p or 5760x1080

In my circumstance this is a good monitor for me. I already have two 1920 x 1080 monitors. This would be great for a 3rd middle monitor. Also, as stated above, you would have little to no black bars for watching movies.

All I need now is $400. :)

Wow, lots of complaints about dead pixels in the reviews...

21:9 is one of the more common widescreen movie formats. 16:9 is the other. so half the time your movie blurays on a standard HD screen will still have blackbars on the top. this means you arent getting full 1080p vertical res (ie 1920x800) and that is a lot of unused pixels and a fair amount of lost resolution.

if they made a monitor with 1600 or 1920 vertical resolution in 21:9 ratio, i would buy it in a heartbeat.

this monitor is interesting in that there appear to be 2 displayport sockets(one on side and one on bottom). makes me wonder if one is a dp out or passthru for daisychaining.

great price. if the dell version was this price i would buy.

Yeah, that sucks. =(

Yeah...I was thinking it would be a great monitor for the kitchen. I have a waterproof Logitech keyboard and a cheap eBay wireless mouse. I usually put on a Netflix cartoon for the kiddo on one side of the screen and nef here while we eat, so extra-wide would be awesome :D

fyi update:
seems like it is 399 everywhere newegg, bestbuy, amazon. there was a review of this model on tomshardware, the pip options are actually very impressive. you can even hook up a 2nd pc or dvd player and the pip will split screen in half.

also i saw the LG version in person. the aspect ratio with matching res content is quite lovely to behold, but the size is just way to short vertically. felt like it was only 10" tall and i would have to lean forward so my head was 12" away in order for it to fill my field of view the way i want.

i will be waiting until there is a 39" 2.39:1 1600P+ version.
