3930K v.s. 3960X overclocking

Is there any data out there comparing 3930K OC'ing versus 3960X OC'ing? I suspect the extra cache hinders the clock speed ceiling, but at the same time, the 3960X is probably the better silicon...

Not sure, but we are slowly accumulating some data in the SB-E overclocking thread. I thought you were subscribed, but just in case others are reading here it is http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2207869 . If you have a SB-E chip, post there in the thread and we'll add to the leaderboard. So far only 6-7 chips have been submitted.

We have more K chips than X, and everyone seems to be doing mild-moderate overclocking here at AT, but so far, it seems there is no difference between the two. Average overclocks are 4.6 Ghz at around 1.35v and the leading chip is a K, however, the lead isn't too high, at only 4.68Ghz as of 11-26 which is a bit surprising, given what I've seen over at overclockers.net

Been pretty happy. Idling in the 30's now, which I think is pretty good for air-cooling. For me, I wonder if the 3960X might actually be worse, because the extra cache would create more heat. For those running mid to high-end WC or phase cooling, it likely wouldn't matter.

Interestingly enough, EVERYONE here on AT (except one) is using an Asus board. 🙂
