3870's got a new HSF design?

So I ordered a 2nd 3870 for some crossfire sweetness and the cooler is different than the first one. My first one was ordered late November last year and this new one was ordered last Saturday. The new one has heat pipes.

Guess it doesn't matter though because they'll both be watercooled...

lol, no idea, I already took the HSF off before I ever put the card in my machine.

edit: the new HSF sure has a lot more copper than the old reference design. Plus a bigger fan and 2 heatpipes. Looks a lot better, but I aint testing it

my hd3870's look just the same as yours. One is the older design and the other is the newer and they both look like your pics. I am not sure if it is because one card is used a lot more than the other but it seems like the newer one runs a lot cooler. I will be using some accelero s1 rev2's as soon as they arrive which should help a lot more anyway.

I wouldn't call it new, it's the heatsink that has been used on these cards since launch:

Looks like Diamond is just using it on all their cards now though

hmmm i have both visiontek cards. the first one i got looks like hte smaller hsf and the newer one i for looks like hte larger one.

Eh? I thought all of the cards used the reference design at launch? I know some manufacturers (Apollo and Sapphire) make their own cooler, but this new one looks like a new stock cooler. Of course, I have no idea how long they've been using the new cooler, I don't really pay attention to things like this. I just made the post because the newer HSF looks like it'd own the old HSF in terms of temps.

It should be better than the original stock reference cooler.

I feel so left out...makes me want a 3870-- I got a 8800GT though. For some reason 3870 looks alot better than the 8800GTs. Maybe its the red color.

That's the EXACT same heatsink/fan combo I have on my 1950XT, down to the plastic and silver trim. Looks like you got a heatsink that was sitting around the factory.

why dont u sell that barely used new 3870 heatsink with the heatpipes? i'm sure someone with a 3870 would be interested in it for better temps!

I would be interested in either of those HSF if you want to sell!
