3870 because of cooler and faster performance in most games...

BTW i have a 3870 X2 and i kept it instead of keeping a 9800 GX2.

What if the 9600GT was a dual slot one like the Palit? That might keep cooler than the 3870.

Heat isnt an issue with either card so thats not a plus or minus on any account, With quality settings turned on like AF and AA the 9600GT wins, but obviously as newer games come out youll have to stop using these settings so the 3780 might be more futre proof.

Whichever card you choose youll be happy.

I'd choose whatever is cheaper. If they are around the same price. 3870 in my opinion.

I grabbed a 3870 to replace my 8800 gts 640. Honestly I can't tell any difference in games, speed wise. I have noticed that games seem smoother somehow though. Not quite sure what it is, but it just feels different. I made the choice over the 8800 GTS 512 as I have a crossfire board and would like to try out crossfire sometime. I probably would have gone the way of the G92 if I didn't love the IP35 chipset so much :)

As has been said, whichever is cheaper. Unless you run Linux. In which case you have no reasonable choice but NV for at least another year or so.

I'd look at the benches for the games I play @ the reso I'd play. 9600gt seems to win the majority of benches, at least in my case, and is MUUUUUUUUCH cheaper here. So I went with that.

I think I'd go with the 3870 if they were the same price. But in the US, the 9600 GT is MUCH cheaper.

Ok, thanks for all the input! After looking at all the benches for these cards, it was still difficult to decide as they perform fairly similarly.

9600 GT performs slightly better in most cases, specially if you use DX10.

Palit 9600 GT.. have had few Palit-cards and loved all of them; brilliant overclockers, good cooling solutions, cheap and well they have same reliability as other cards. I think they get their GPU's cheaper than other manufacturers (PcPartner, Flextronics, Foxconn etc.) since they order so freaking many of them; they basically own Asia's markets and have gained serious share on Europe's markets.

Don't know how warranty things go in US? If I have understanded correctly you have to deal with manufacturer? In EU countries you just have to deal with the shop you bought that card.

BTW. how does 8800 GS 384 fare against 9600 GT and HD3870 ? At least in Newegg it's cheaper than HD3850 256MB ($10) and $20 cheaper than 9600 GT.

When games are unplayable on the 9600gt they also will be on the 3870 so might as well just get which brand you prefer. I love my 9600gt, runs super quiet and plays everything great at 1680x1050, but I am also an Nvidia fan boy.

Kind of like same argument.

I would personally get a 3870 because it performs similarly, and I'm tired of the driver troubles (Yes, nVidia drivers) I've been having. Sure, there was once a time when I hated ATI's drivers and switched to nVidia, but this seems to have reversed lately. ATI seems to have that advantage now.

But those in the link are the ASUS EN8800GS which are hard to find and more expensive than normal 8800GS

Well Fortron 350W from..hmm 2002? is enough for Core 2 Duo@3GHz + 8800 GTS 640MB@650/2000..type of system and these 9600 GT and HD3870 are easier on PSU than that 8800 GTS 640MB.

Motherboard doesn't matter.
