Hi there,

I've been upgrading my brother in law's computer for some time now, from getting him a new HD to just yesterday for his birthday a new HSF to quiet down his PC by replacing the stock AMD fan with a Hyper 212.

Currently his 3870 is pretty much on full fan speed even at 0% load. I've read on a few older forums that this is an issue for some card owners and one of the only solutions seems to be using the Asus driver and Asus Smart Doctor.

I'm curious if anyone has used Smart Doctor without the Asus 3870 driver installed?

Thanks!

Does he game at all? Why still on a 3870?

I'd guess that it needs the dust blown out of it carefully.

He won't be upgrading any time soon. He plays Eve @ 1080p and his X2 5000 and 3870 do a great job at it. A little old but still good for what he likes. I try to get him an upgrade here and there for his birthday and Christmas.

In any case that's a good idea, the fan is doing 81% @ 40c. Maybe it's on that high because the heatsink is dusty as hell. I cleaned it out last year but he has a dog and 3 cats, I bet it's covered in dust.

Believe it or not a 3870 is still quite capable as long as everything isn't set on very high.

I believe it, it does 1080p Eve for him on high (no AA/AF) without any trouble. He's not a frame rate junky or anything and is happy with the 50 or so he gets.

I've put some compressed air in my bag though and I'll be cleaning the heck out of that card when I visit him again.

ATITrayTools can control fan speed, voltages, tons of other things too. I use it on my 4870, and I know it supports the 3870.
