3800 x2 seems sluggish?

I just took a o/ced 3000+ out of my system and dropped a 3800 x2 in it and it seems sluggish at times when I multitask(no more then what I did with the 3000+). I installed drivers for it and optimization app or whatever its called. Am I missing something here?

Use Task Manager to make sure an instance of a program doesn't stay in the background hugging CPU cycles.

don't see anything stressing the CPU(s). I just played some CS:S and it runs like crap. I guess I'll try to redo windows in a day or so to see if that fixes anything. Heh and I thought I was upgrading.

I am assuming you loaded this driver:

AMD Athlon? 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16

I had a few problems until I loaded that driver.

You can also load the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer and AMD Power Monitor Version 1.0.1 from that page - the Power Monitor puts a little bar in your system tray that shows processor usage.

I do have it o/ced ATM which I ran SP2004 for several hours with no problems. Maybe I should clock it back down to default?

Question for the OP:

When you push control alt delete, do you see two processor activity line graphs?

I would recommend formatting. There was a discussion about HALs or something like that a couple of days ago. The thread concluded that there are three types of Windows XP configurations.(HALs I believe) When you have a single core processor, you have the possibility of having one of two installed. Only one of them will be able to make the transition from single core to dual core automatically.

Someone who knows what I am talking about should provide advice.

I suggest simply formatting your computer. If the problem is software, that is guarenteed to solve it.

didn't know there was a option. At least I didn't notice it when I had a single core in there. I'll look it over.

Well I was told in another post it was needed by one person then there was several others said it wasn't needed. So you can guess which I went with.

well redoing windows seems to have helped but heck redoing windows on a 1ghz Duron with 512mb will seem fast untill it gets loaded with a bunch of crap. We'll see in a few weeks/months how well it runs.

You don't always have to. I went from a 2500+ Barton to my current processor while also changing mobo, ram, hard disks, case, PSU, optical drives and videocard, and I did not have to reinstall. Everything is still smooth, stable and quick. If you delete the appropriate drivers beforehand and clean your registry, XP is very good a recognizing new hardware and managing drivers during an upgrade.

It is not necessary to do a clean OS install for a processor swap (anymore).

Other than a overpriced(IMO) Raptor any suggestions? Would I seen any difference going from a 7200RPM/8mb SATA to 7200RPM/16mb SATAII?

Just don't reboot as often. Leave it on 24h/day and join one of the Team AnandTech projects.
