I am not a fan of Maggie Gyllenhaal or her looks. I actually thought it was a bad move to replace Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dark Knight, because as much as Katie was a bad actor, Maggie was, to me, distractingly homely, and it just made no sense that two powerful men (Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent) would be competing for her affections. But yeah, Diane Lane is gorgeous.

I think it depends on who the 55 yo male actor is. Brad Pitt is 51. George Clooney is 55. Denzel is 60. Age is one thing, but more importantly they would be out of her league. It was like Brad Pitt in World War Z. No way would he be married to that woman, even if she was much younger. Vera Farmiga is in her 40s, but you can see her with someone older or younger.

I kinda like Maggie Gyllenhaal's awkwardness, but she never was leading lady material. Except in maybe Secretary.

I think the "very different looking" thing helps. Hollywood tends to pick the same type over and over, and being fairly face blind I have a difficult time telling them apart. Maggie I can tell apart, and I find her smoking hot. Although honestly, I think "Stranger than fiction" is the only thing I've seen her in for more than ten minutes.
