3700+/7800GT or x2 3800+/6800GS

I don't know which one to get, the 3700+ seems to be better in single threaded applications. But the x2 3800+ is good for heavy multitasking. And exactly how does the 6800GS compare to the 7800GT? I want to futureproof myself so I'm leaning towards the dual core.

How soon will you upgrade again, and how much multitasking do you really need?

Also, a 7900GT is under $300, a 3700+ and 7900GT will probably offer a much better gaming experience than X2 and 6800 for at least the next year or two.

I probably wont upgrade for about 4-5 years for this system. And I suppose I won't do a lot of heavy multitasking. Probably just running winamp while playing a game and maybe some other apps.

I agree with HybridSquirrel.

eVGA has a step-up program which allows you to trade in your video card for another and just pay the difference.

However, if done, you must do so within 90 days.

yeah within 90 days. but i mean if this is a budget thing and you get a paycheck within the next few days id say its worth it

If you accept that you'll need to replace the video card next year, a 6800 is OK for now and easier to upgrade than the CPU.

Can you wait until you can save another $100 for 3800 + 7900GT, or do you "have" to upgrade right now?

If you aren't overclocking and you want it to last 4 years, you might also spend the extra $60 to move to a 4200+ X2.

get an OPTY 165 instead of the 3800 for only $30 more. get an x850 xt instead of 6800gs(same price)
