I seriously doubt India would be willing to throw away 1700+ lives on liberating another country unasked in the name of promoting their govt model, even if the cash wasn't an issue. I don't see how they are more nationalistic than America.

You probably get to meet only Indians who have left India. Non-resident Indians tend to feel guilty about leaving India and try to over-compensate with psuedo-patriotism. First generation Indian Americans also tend to cling on more tightly to their traditions, for both good and bad. However, cooking at home with cowdung patties in the U.S is simply ludicrous. This happens almost exclusively in remote villages, amongst the poorest of the poor in India. I can't even imagine how someone might get hold of cowdung in San Antonio.

Americans are easily the most nationalistic people on Earth. This too works both ways for sometimes they can be utterly blind to their own flaws. On the other hand, they do have plenty to be proud of, so I wouldn't hold it against them.

BTW, your comments about butt-wiping reveal more about you than about Indians. Sometimes it's good to let go of morbid fascinations. Surely, your mind has better things it can learn and retain.

HumplePie:
Discovery Channel is completely wrong if it claims that most Indians revere or even tolerate the presence of rats. A lot of programming on Discovery seeks to entertain, and even I enjoy it quite often. But I am disappointed that in the name of entertainment they are serving to perpetuate extremely narrow perspectives that are often employed out of context.

India is a dirty country, indeed. Most Indians do have a lot to learn about hygiene and discipline. However, the culture is over 5000 years old and it can't be changed overnight by modern findings. People have survived - thrived - in that environ and it is very difficult to make a case for a complete overhaul of the culture. India is dirty, but it has a lot more to offer by way of cultural depth than any other country in the world - by an order of magnitude over the U.S. Some of these facets will be lost if we attempt to 'cleanse' the people and their change their habits en masse. Moreover, most modern changes are sustainable only when the local population adapts them into their natural lifestyle.

U.S levels of sanitation can and will never be achieved in India without truncating essential aspects of society and culture. Some people on this board might read that statement as condoning unsanitary conditions in India. But it's just an argument that some behavioural attributes can only be successful in a limited environment - or made successful by limiting the environment.

the Discovery, or mayhap National Geographic channel talked about that rat temple. They then said it's part of the Hindu religion and thats why the people there revere the rats at the temple. They also said that many people in india tolerate rats because they many people in India follow the Hindu religion. but that same tolerance causes problems on farms and with argriculture because the rats eat everything up. They said that farmers hire out this certain "tribes" of rat hunters, that had their own documentary later, that kill off rats.

I never said every Indian loves rats or eats food cooked with poop. Also, if you are wondering how you can get cow chips in San Antonio... LOL, this is Texas. It's cattle country and my uncle owns a huge cattle ranch in Hondo which is a few miles down highway 90 from San Antonio. Getting ahold of cowpoop around here really isn't that hard if you want to.

As you said, the sanitation in the country of India isn't the best. Yes, there are lots of places around the world where sanitation issues are a problem. I know there is no way any of those places will ever become sanitized. Heck, I just have to hop across the Border to Mexico and go through some really nasty towns there. Yet, there are some really pretty and nice places in Mexico like Monte Rey despite many more places that are downright gross. India, from what I can gather, is the same way. Many nasty places, and a few nice ones. Great... Pointing that out doesn't give people the right to go all stupid on me and call me numbnuts and ignorant or racist. Heck, I wasn't the one that made the original joke, I just qualified it. The fact I don't mind a good debate when I can point to sources for my information and play devils advocate doesn't mean the some of the posters here need to go crazy.

Oh and the show was called Taboo and it aired on June 30th 9pm ET. This was about the rat catchers of India. Now, if it was about the rat catchers of Raja... blah blah whatever the name was, then that would be different. Nope, the Rat Catchers of India. The rat tmeple of India. This is how the series was portrayed.

I'm not racist, I'm saying most of India is NASTY to the extreme in the way people live there and WANT to live there. It's just gross.

HumblePie just go to P&N, you'll probably fit in there.

Don't judge 1 billion people on ONE family you met.

LOL I don't, nor was it off one family. Watch Discovery and they like to point this stuff out for some reason.

Anyhow, the whole point was I was being facetious like the people here making fun of cows floating away and such.

It does suck to get floodwaters like that but there isn't much you or I can do to stop it. It's not like it doesn't flood there every year. Not to this extreme, true, but no one forces people to live there. Just like no one forced Florida residents to live there but I think it's silly when I see people pointing to more articles yet again where a hurricane has flattened stuff there.
I stopped paying attention to discovery channel when they talked aobut third world contries a long time ago
hen then to focus on the worst stuff / wierd stuff that one village might do (in the entire county )
in order to get people to watch the shows
in general people are not interested on seeing how good it is
but if u actually go there as i have u will see it is not like that . . .

Yeah, I'm traveling to India next week.

In fact, I'll be arriving in Mumbai and then I'll be traveling to Pune. Staying in the state of Maharashthra the whole time.

So yesterday, I saw a herd of immigrants sitting around waiting for work. They're either Indian or Mexican, who knows, they all look the same to me. Anyhow, I think they were gay
