36x 12x 48x CD-RWs!!!

ah thats what buffer underun and related technologies are for .. eh well thats cool, maybe they will drive the price down on 24x's ..

Yeah...You will most likely never do cd to cd copy at 36x and especially not cd rips on the fly...

It appears the cd reads speeds are starting to top out...

my 12x10x32x seems to show though cd-r speed has increased 3x the cd read increased 1/2x

It also appears that cd-rw speeds seem to be limited though I don't know the technical aspects of why...Is it the media???

I'm a current Plextor 12x burner owner, but the most impressive drive out there right now is made by Yamaha. The 24X from Yamaha is a real killer. Below is an excerpt from a 32x recorder roundup of drives, the fastest 32x tested was only 14 seconds faster than the Yamaha 24x on a 74min disc.

"The Freecom 32A and LiteOn LTR-32123S come after Mitsumi CR-480ATE to clear the clouds about the 32x recording speed. Many users expected that the 32x recorders would offer a major performance upgrade over the 24x recorders. The truth is that only Freecom 32A offers a noticeable time difference (20ses) against the faster 24x recorder (Yamaha CRW3200E). That time difference with 74min CDs is even smaller (14secs)"

The problem with these drives is that they all use the "Zone" method of recording where the cd starts to burn at 16x, then a data link is burned into your disc, then recording stops and the disc speeds up to 24x, and then a data link is made, and then recording stops and the disc is sped up to 32x and then continues burning. There are more steps, or "Zones" than I have mentioned, but you get the picture.

Look for yourself

Well, the drive's actual average speed is 26.something x, it just claims 36x because that's its maximum speed. So really, it's not that much faster than a 24x CLV drive (I believe the 24x drives are still full CLV, someone correct me if I'm wrong). I'm waiting for the day we can have 36x full CLV writers.

I am realizing that even 16x is fast enough for me, I haven't even tried to burn at 24x because all I have is crappy media and don't even want to waste one to try.

"(I believe the 24x drives are still full CLV, someone correct me if I'm wrong)."

I don't think any CDR drives past 16x are CLV. Even some 16X drives aren't CLV, the Yamaha comes to mind.

I wish Plextor would release a faster SCSI burner.... I remember last year a post saying that Plextor was getting out of the SCSI market. Someone from Plextor responded saying there was no truth to that statement, but they haven't released a SCSI burner since then.

Newegg.com has the 32x lite on burner listed for $149 shipped, but they won't get it until the 2nd week of Jan.

Although my Lite-On DVD drive is only rated for 40X CD read, I've clocked it at over 45X sustained transfer in the middle of a disc. Combine that with Burn-Proof, and I don't forsee any problems with the faster CD-RW drives. Most recent hard disks can put out well over 10 MB/s sustained in the real world. That will more than cover these new CD-RW's. Bring on the speed!

<-- looking for an excuse to upgrade my trusty Acer 8x.

Why would you want to waste your money on a SCSI version? I mean, 12X is 12X, it doesn't matter how the data gets there, does it?

No it doesnt. But Plextor is still making some killer SCSI CD-ROMs, so if you want to match a pair of Plextors for on-the-fly copies, it'd be nice to have the burner as SCSI as well.

Im still using my good ole 4x RICOH burner which has been great. Only coasters that I made where when I first got it and used the crap software that came with it....then I moved up to Nero! I wonder if the new RICOH drives are as good?

Ever try doing on-the-fly copies with IDE? It sucks, and sucks miserably. No matter the configuration.

The SCSI interface is night and day superior to IDE. I gladly spent at least twice as much for a 12X speed rating, to get the SCSI interface.
