36GB Raptor or 250GB WD 16MB Cache drive for booting Windows?

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 250GB WD hard drive with 16MB cache. I'm wondering if it would be a faster boot drive than my 36GB Raptor.

Should I just scrap the Raptor and use this as my sole hard drive, or use both so that I have the swap file on a separate partition?

Or, should I boot windows off the 250GB drive and relegate my swap file to the Raptor?

Decisions, decisions. 🙂

You may as well boot off the Raptor, and relegate the WD to storage. They'd probably be quite similar speed-wise though. If I were you though, I'd sell the Raptor now, before the 36GB models fall in resale value. You could probably get a pretty penny for it right now.

What about the page file/swap file issue? I could probably only get $80 for the drive. Should I just put that towards a 400GB drive or something?

The Page File thing really isn't a big deal anymore so long as you have a Gig of RAM or so. I'd sell it and buy a second 250-300 GB drive personally. Then you can still move the Page File and have a half-terabyte for pr0n.

Thanks; you've been very helpful. I just find that selling something worth $80 isn't worth my time anymore. 🙂

In terms of game load times, which would be better: a Raptor or a 250 or 320GB WG with 16MB Cache and SATA 3.0GB/s?

That's irrelevant to me because my games won't fit on a 36GB Raptor anymore. 🙂

In the review I read of my 250GB drive, it came very close the the 74GB Raptor, and even beat it in quite a few of the tests. I think it was on the Tech Report.

So you're happy with the 250 versus the 36 Raptor?

I haven't used it enough to give you an answer yet. It might take me a few days. Let me boot FEAR off of it.

I have the WD 250GB 16mb cache drive. It's just as fast if not slightly faster than my 36gb WD raptor was. If it was the 74gb raptor, the raptor would be a little faster.

That's decent info, thanks. 🙂

I'm gonna load a game right now and give my impressions.

is that a WD2500KS? it beats the old raptor pretty soundly according to storagereview.

Yeah that's the drive I have. Sounds like I should sell the Raptor. It's just so much trouble. I hate bubble-wrapping. 🙂

Not that I really needed to, but just got a second 160gb WD SATA II drive for my X2 rig and put them in raid-0. Makes my raid-0 36gb raptors look like a snail in comparison. Using HDtach 3.01. Burst rate..278.9MB/s...sustained rate 104.3MB/s...burst rate on my raid-0 raptors was 189MB/s, with sustained rate of 76.8MB/s.

Do you notice a difference going to RAID-0, or is it unnoticeable like so many people claim?

I voted to boot off the raptor. But personally I would just sell it. But then again I would have never bought it. It's a little loud and over priced for me. But if your going to keep it you might as well use it to boot, its too small for anything else really. Keep your data and games on the 250. Get another drive for your porn. I notice I can disable the whole drive when I need to hide my porn. Yes I'm a grown man and still I find reasons to hide the porn.
