36GB Raptor, built 4/4/04, not any quieter

People keep asking about the new 36GB Raptors and whether they will be quieter. I just got this brand new one from Western Digital and it sounds identical to my old one. The date of manufacture is April 4, 2004.
I'm not concerned about the noise though, because I have it on a ventilated foam bed.

Do they have whine? Loud whine or soft whine? If this question could be answered by a person with experience with lots of drives I would appreciate it. I don't care about seek noise but the whine kills me. 🙁

Sound is VERY subjective!

Download HD Tach and run it. This will quickly reveal what drive you have as the newer revisions have slightly reduced access times.

Cheers!

Yes they whine. I don't like the high-pitched noise of Raptors. Even my WD JB drive sounded whiney to me.
I have my Raptor sitting on some foam and I can't hear it anymore.

I have one Raptor made in the middle of 2003 and one made February 6 or this year and they sound exactly the same, although neither whines.

they do NOT have the scsi whine. they are, however,i bit louder than normal hard drives. i have i running side by side with 3 WD 8meg specials, i can't tell it apart when they are merely spinning but as soon as the raptor gets some activity it makes itself known 🙂
