Dude, this happened to me as well. I bought my 360 about a month ago with a new Oblivion. Played for about 3-5 hours and I got the disc error message. Checked the disc and there were plenty of circular scratches in the disc and it was unplayable. I was within the exchange period for Gamestop (will never buy there again) and the asshole manager didn't want to hear it. No exchange for either of the things I bought. Went to another Gamestop and exchanged the game no problem. At this point I dismissed the idea of the console scratching anything. Now Oblivion is scratched again, but playable. Got Gears of War and scratched again... no doubt it's the 360 scratching discs now. Got an exchange for the game (didn't risk to it scratch again) and called up MS. They asked the usual questions about whether I moved the console while playing, nothing else that causes vibration next to the console, etc and didn't take much for the guy to process the work order. I sent the machine in today.

If you go to the Xbox forums there's a bunch of people with the same problem and some of the MS employees post in these threads saying it's impossible for this to happen and is user caused. There's another douchebag posting in each of the numerous threads saying this is not a widespread problem when one person is crying about it. Does this noob know this is the internet and not everyone is going to register and post and instead is just looking for answers? As soon as I get my system back I'm signing up for warranty. Even with this people get the shaft since MS won?t pay for shipping... anymore. Gee, I guess they?ve had so many shipping labels to pay for they stopped doing it. I've read people sending theirs in like 4-5 times and getting beat up refurbs. Bah.

yeah once i get the original owners details (he'd registered the machine with MS) ill ring back and try get the repair order, but i think ill check mail costs first. its probably gonna cost a pretty penny to ship this to get fixed.

i might just replace the drive myself instead.

The xbox360 destroyed a couple of my bother in laws games as well. At first when I checked on the internet about it I couldn't believe any company would release a machine that fvcked up. But then I realized this is MS we're talking about here.

Wouldn't it been worth the extra $3 to put a DVD drive in the thing that didn't consume your customers $50 games like a bag of lays?

wow that crazy. I was looking at buying an xbox 360 the other day. I think im going to wait awhile until Microsoft get this problem fixed. I dont want to spend $300, $400 on a system that going to scratch a game disc that cost $40-$60.

This isn't happening on every 360.... there are tons of people who are experiencing no problems at all. If you buy one now you really shouldn't have any problems. I bought one in may and it has run perfectly.

right

took the beast apart and added some foam to the inside of the DVD drive. on its lid.

seems to have worked, was a bitch gettin the foam the right height. i think i've got it right now, checked with a torch and it looked like they were clear of the disc when the disc was flat and touching when it was tilted

seems to of worked too, though ive only tried DVD discs free off magazines. they dont spin as fast as game discs, so il have to try find an actual demo disc on it. still i set one going and moved the console vigorously from horizontal to vertical a couple of times and the discs came out with no scratches.

The talk of DIY fixing makes me wonder if there's a way to just swap out the DVD drive with the drive from the HD-DVD player. If that's the case then I'm totally going to do that because I really don't want an external device.

whoa... didn't expect to see a thread like this. Add my son to the list of people who have had discs ruined in his 360. (1 disc - Madden) I was quite irritated about it - realized it wasn't my son's fault, but rather because of a faulty product. Plus, I figured that there's no way Microsoft would admit to having a faulty product that does stuff like that.

well it uses a SATA connection but not like on SATA hdd. the connection data wise is just a SATA connection, but the power is some wierd 12pin thing

this must of been known for ages, CD systems like this have been round for donkeys years.

surely the gyroscopic effects of spinning discs are understood. the 360 spins game discs very fast (DVD drives dont usually make lots of noise unlike 52x speed CD drives) so of course if you move the drive the discs simply gonna stay pointing in its original direction causing to to contact the lasers cradle.

foam pads worked though, i used some foam out of a cuflink box, but im looking for a spare thomson DVD drive since their drives have rubber pads in them to stop this kinda thing happening and i wanna pilfer them of the drive

So are those the same connections for the HD-DVD drive (I have't been able to find internal pics)
