well there went £40

was playing GoW, had headphones on so didnt hear anything, then the game just stopped and the little panel came to the side and said "disc is unreadable"

this has happened before, and since id been playing for ages i just turned the console off.

went back for another round of GoW to try out the online co-op mode and the game wouldnt load, same disc error. took the disc out and there it was.....

a huge concentric scratch (thats deep enough to feel) about 2mm wide, 8-10mm from the edge of the disc. i would take pics but my camera just cant do it very well.

the store i bought it from, Tesco, doesnt usually take games back, and its not like they sold me a faulty product.

i guess im SOL. i only bought it yesterday too.

EDIT: UPDATE - Tesco replaced the game without question! awesome job tesco! and they were selling it at over £10 below RRP

EDIT2: im gonna mod the drive, it seems im gonna be SOL with getting the drive repaired since im the second owner, i checked out the llamma's guides and looked at their addition of foam pads to the casing of the drive, so im gonna do that.

how thick are these pads? 2-3mm? i have no trouble getting them, but i dunno how thick they are

EDIT3: right

took the beast apart and added some foam to the inside of the DVD drive. on its lid.

seems to have worked, was a bitch gettin the foam the right height. i think i've got it right now, checked with a torch and it looked like they were clear of the disc when the disc was flat and touching when it was tilted

seems to of worked too, though ive only tried DVD discs free off magazines. they dont spin as fast as game discs, so il have to try find an actual demo disc on it. still i set one going and moved the console vigorously from horizontal to vertical a couple of times and the discs came out with no scratches.

i got my 360 from ebay, and the seller included the reciept. it was purchased in april, so do you think i could just jack the 360 in for a new one with a drive that works?

Umm, you can always try to exchange it, (the disk) the worst they can do is say no. Doesn't hurt to try, good luck.

My friend's 360 does that as well, not enough to make the disc unreadable though. His was a launch 360, how about yours?

it was purchased in april 2006.

so i dont think its a launch system, but it could be.

have been having lots of problems with the drive in this machine, even with brand spankin new discs it sometimes spits out disc errors.

on the blower to MS now, though im on hold.

well calling was a waste of time

basically got told that MS dont make faulty console :disgust:

but after arguing with her, i eventually got told she will put in a repair request. But the machine was already registered with the previous owner ( i bought it off ebay from a guy who couldnt justify keeping the console due to financial difficulty) and so i cant put in a request till i find out his name, number, adress and then switch it over to mine.

its gonna take ages.

i so cant be bothered to jump through MS's hoops. ill just hit up ebay for a 2nd hand copy and hope it doesnt happen again.

checked my other discs and oblivion and TDU have similar concentric scratches... though very very feint.

Many companies don't offer a second user warranty anyway I think, so you might be lucky they are doing anything.

my 360 that i bought on launch day has been locking up every ~2 hours while playing GOW. I heard that there was some class action lawsuit, will MS send me a new one if I call them?

The 360 uses either Hitachi or Samsung drives, one of which is reputed to scratch disks.

I have never had a console scratch up a disc so badly that it was unusuable, and neither has my computer (that doesn't say that I haven't scratched up a few discs hear and there). I would be pretty pissed if I was the OP, but I guess you just have to hope it won't happen again =(

seriously, what is with all these problems. I've never, ever had a problem with other DVD drives (except for one when I didn't put it on the tray right). There's no reason for the lens to be so damn close to the disc.

you're a tool.

and its because of people like him that dodgy products get out on the market

"hey boss this thing doesnt work!"

"i know, but hey the tool who buys it will probably fix it up himself so it'll be fine"

'course this could be the reason the unit was listed on eBay in the first place...

it may well of been yes and theres always a risk when buying from ebay, but either way its still a faulty product. i've got the receipt so theres nothing stopping me from takin the thing back anyway. this might not happen again, but id rather have a replacement or get this one fixed.

You're a tool. A manufacturer should never sell a product that requires user modification to work properly.

That said, it's an easy but annoying fix.

Same thing happened to my gears of war. It can happen if you move the the 360 while it is running with the disc inside. I exchanged by copy, and it has been working ever since.

well i dont think i knocked the unit, its laying on its side on my desk which is pretty heavy.

focusing that hard on playing i cant remember if i knocked it or anything.

thats what the woman told me on the phone, like its a viable excuse for the 360 to damage discs. im sure its not beyond the talent of modern man to make a disc drive that doesnt scratch discs when its moved. i've knocked my rig over by mistake when it was ripping files off a disc.... still worked, no damage, HDD didnt even mind.

compact discs have been around along time, 20 years is it? all thats changed is the formats.....their basic workings havent

Dude, this happened to me as well. I bought my 360 about a month ago with a new Oblivion. Played for about 3-5 hours and I got the disc error message. Checked the disc and there were plenty of circular scratches in the disc and it was unplayable. I was within the exchange period for Gamestop (will never buy there again) and the asshole manager didn't want to hear it. No exchange for either of the things I bought. Went to another Gamestop and exchanged the game no problem. At this point I dismissed the idea of the console scratching anything. Now Oblivion is scratched again, but playable. Got Gears of War and scratched again... no doubt it's the 360 scratching discs now. Got an exchange for the game (didn't risk to it scratch again) and called up MS. They asked the usual questions about whether I moved the console while playing, nothing else that causes vibration next to the console, etc and didn't take much for the guy to process the work order. I sent the machine in today.

If you go to the Xbox forums there's a bunch of people with the same problem and some of the MS employees post in these threads saying it's impossible for this to happen and is user caused. There's another douchebag posting in each of the numerous threads saying this is not a widespread problem when one person is crying about it. Does this noob know this is the internet and not everyone is going to register and post and instead is just looking for answers? As soon as I get my system back I'm signing up for warranty. Even with this people get the shaft since MS won?t pay for shipping... anymore. Gee, I guess they?ve had so many shipping labels to pay for they stopped doing it. I've read people sending theirs in like 4-5 times and getting beat up refurbs. Bah.

Why is it that consoles always seem to have problems doing the most common things, such as reading a DVD, millions and millions of DVD drives are in being made every year, and game consoles can never get it right.

what if you put something very thin, like slightly thicker than a piece of paper, on the tray to elevate the disk a bit more when its spinning? is it the tray that causes the scratches?
