360s digital audio connector problem

ok, so i just bought a set of the AX360 headphones, and in order to use them you have to connect them the the digital audio spot on you AV cables. but for some reason, i cannot get the darn cable to fit. i had some off brand HD component cables, so i just went and bought the microsoft ones to make sure it wasn't the cables fault. still no dice. are these cables extremely hard to plug in or am i missing something?
 
sigh........i'm an idiot. didn't realize the caps came off the end of the cables...guess that's what i get for never using them before and not researching first. would've saved a long trip to best buy and $45. live and learn i guess.
