360 scratches discs

recently occuring, games that are inserted after a while show a read error problem. upon inspection the discs are scratched up.
I havnt seen this first hand, its my g/f's teenage son who says it scratches his discs and he gets read errors.
h'es had this system for a couple years now, in the past, its been taken back twice for "red ring of death" problems. so this is a new problem now.

still under warranty, is this a known problem with 360's?
he keeps his dics in the case...never a problem over the years with any of his games. sometimes happens with rentals too.

i'm not certain if its actually scratching them, or if its just some hardware issue with the 360 suddenly not reading the disks.

Is it a scratch in a circle all the way around the disc? If so, that is the laser moving too close to the disc and cutting a groove in the disc. This might be covered by the warranty, although it usually only happens if the console is moved/bumped while the game is playing so you could have a hard time getting Microsoft to accept responsibility and repair the box.

If there are random scratches on the disc, I can't think of a way that the XBOX could be causing it unless there is a LOT of dust/dirt inside the DVD drive.

After he gets the 360 fixed, Cyco had a suggestion for any uplayable discs in the other scratching thread:

Rent the disc, install to the hard drive, then just use the scratched up disc to pass the disc checks.

i'm not certain. he did show me a disk a few days ago and it was not circular. He said he took good care of them.
I have nothing to go on atm than what he's telling me, i havnt had the chance to try a fresh disk and put it in.

either way, he is getting read errors on his games, i just wanted to check if there are any known issue's regarding this.

i'll have to check it out myself to be sure. maybe next time he rents a game, i'll check it out. for the time being i told him to put the 360 tower vertically.
