this is a stupid question

I have a 360 (bought it used knowing it was banned)
what can I do with the 360? (meaning other than gaming)
I read the faq can I still use it as a media center extender
http://lifehacker.com/398035/d...-game-on-your-xbox-360

sorry for the dumb q I really never messed with the 360 (only reason I bought it was for ace combat)

Ya know, I called Xbox customer support asking if they "banned consoles" and they said no, only GT's. Unless it's modded (which I didn't ask him about) how is it banned?

Dead wrong. They don't ban GTs for modding, they ban consoles. IIRC, you can get your GT banned by violating TOS on XBL, though.

Burn a DVD-R with a game (you own) on it? It's almost irrelevant why it's banned, they won't unban it.

In addition to banning consoles for modding, I believe Stepto say they ban consoles for phishing.

I'd think you should be able to do anything that doesn't require connecting to Xbox Live, which I assume includes using it as a media center extender. If you wanted to use it as a uPnP media player you might have issues, because you have to login to Live to download the divx codec the first time you try to play a divx file.

That's just what they told me. I said "unless it's modded" but still, I too thought they banned consoles themselves when I called. I asked when I was buying a used 360 Jasper Arcade unit. I was on the phone with him checking everything on it before I handed over the cash. Then I had ownership transferred over to me before I paid him and I was playing on Xbox live 5 minutes after he left.

Always good to cover all your bases before paying for something like that, but I suppose the average joe doesn't realize you can get your 360 banned.

It has to let you skip connecting it to the Internet... some people don't have broadband Internet.

how do I get around that internet connection wizard
because it just attempts to connect and set up a network but ends up failing to connect because it's a banned system (it said something like it violated tos call 1800.xxxxxxxx)
and I couldnt get it to show up on my home network

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Take a picture of the screen.

If you're trying to login to a Gamertag that was already on the system, don't do that. Create a new, local gamertag (non-live).

a banned console simply means the cannot connect connect to xbox live, no matter who's gamertag you try to connect to xbox live with.

you can do everything else w/the 360, such as stream media from your PC to the 360, play games, and probably play copied games since they only ban modded consoles.

you simply cannot get on xbox live, which if you wanted to play xbox live arcade games, really sucks.

Why would you intentionally buy a banned console? You are not only buying a useless game console, you are supporting some kid who doesn't understand the concept of consequences.

because people often sell them for much cheaper

i've seen banned 360s listed for under $100 on CL

I hope you got it REALLY cheap, as in less than $150 cheap because anything more is a complete and utter ripoff.

Yeah but spending $150 to play ONE GAME that was released 2 years ago, and not even allowed to play online... a complete waste of money. And as he said, it's only gathering dust now.

some of us don't care about the online part. the only one i played online was COD4 and gave up on it due to lack or region filtering (i'm in the UK and IW in their stupidity has the game put me in games hosted in the US, korea, japan etc. - same reason i'm not getting MW2 btw) so only play the campaign.

so..;) ? lol I spent 1k for a mvs (full neo geo arcade) with 4 games and that collects dust
what I should have spent 300 or so for a (unbanned)360 for one game instead ?
I knew I was buying a 360 system for one game(I lied I just bought fable 2 from gamestop today so for 2 games)....

prob is he wont beable to get any updated codecs for it. So unless he got the mpg4 codec etc before it was banned his streaming capabilities will be limited.

Actually it might be possible. I know some games came with the updates including nxe on disc. I'd think they would install without xbl.

I think you actually order a disc from MS with the update on it, as well. I dunno if this was only when it first came out or if they still do it, though.
