Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. I bought my 360 not quite 2 and a half years ago and already the dvd drive is taking a dump. What gives? I've had the same dvd-rw drive in my computer for over for years and it still works flawlessly. Hell, the computer I built in 2002 still has two working dvd drives in it. Why are these XBOX drives so prone to failure? I realize they try and keep costs down by using cheap components but this is ridiculous. And it doesn't get worked that much because I always install a game before I play it.

Any tips for repairing this? It is a Jasper unit and from what I can tell it has the Liteon 16d2s drive.

You have two options. Buy a special tool for the liteon drive and rip the security key off the firmware, and then buy the same drive and write the security key to the new drive.

Or you can buy a new drive, take your old drive's motherboard out and put it into the liteon. If I'm thinking right the drive motherboard on the liteons has no solder points, so you just have to unplug the drive motherboard, discard the new one's motherboard and put your old drive motherboard in the new drive.
