Anyone familiar with the offering from China, used by over 400 million users world wide?
Reviews from CNET, PC Mag, and Softonic all say that this works and is pretty decent for a free program. I ask because I saw a nice write up on Beta News this past week. I'm a diehard NIS user so not looking to switch, but I run into a lot of folks who prefer a no-cost solution. I am already aware of Avast, MSE, Avira and several other free programs and don't want to start a "what's the best free AV program" thread just asking about the topic.

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks balloonshark, seems like some controversy about this product and its company.
Certainly it seems that this group of people on that forum has really dissected this program for a couple of months or so and I've noted their comments. Again thanks, I've now got to go and find my eye drops!

They have VERY questionable business practices, and their Chinese version of the software borders on malware. Basically it tells you to install their browser or your PC is "at risk", then if you DO end up installing it, it won't let you uninstall. There's also some rumors about spying on private data, but it may or may not be a rival company slandering them.

Whatever, enough smoke to have me risk it. Take a look at Fortinet's Forticlient 5 for a free service. Not many options, protection is the same as Qihoo and Avast, and GREAT parental controls if you need it.

Now that I have used my eye drops after taking balloonsharks' advice and doing all that reading, Entropism, the "smoke" you mentioned has me looking the other way on this one. Thanks to both of you for your recommendations.

By the way, I was tossed out of that thread on Wilders, and my posts were deleted by a mod. All I said was "Considering this forum's general paranoia about virii and spyware border on tin-hat territory, I'm shocked people are so loyal to a company who has such questionable business practices", and a veritable shitstorm erupted. I was called racist against the chinese, ignorant on foreign business practices, etc. Just plain silly.
