Does anyone know exactly what an E 74 code is?

I have done a bunch of searching on the net and it seems as though it's a big mixup between "Oh it's the graphics chip" or "Oh it's the A/V connection" Or "Oh it's the A/V cables" or "Oh it's the ANA/HANA chip that is associated with the A/V connection"

My xbox 360 is modded.. So I'm attempting to fix the problem myself and I've got the xbox taken apart now but I am trying to find out exactly what this error means.

I know it is something to do with video output, because the screen went all crazy before I turned it off and turned it back on and got my first E 74 error. I want to find out exactly what it is..

I've already got almost all the tools to do the xclamp mod so that may be the next step.

E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.

Yeah that's the one that seems to make most sense, So i'm gonna start there and take the whole mobo out and check the bottom to see if all the solder points look good.

Wouldn't it make more sense to try out the cable first since that's the most likely problem?

Not so much no.. the reason being is that the cable has never, ever malfunctioned.. and there's no reason for it to have malfunctioned. it was just sitting there, no crimps, nothing to miraculously destroy it.

The image on the tv definitely had artifacts all over, which is indicating something on the motherboard going awry. The cable was working fine one minute, turned the box off, and turned it back on a second later and all of a sudden E 74

Ok. So I fixed it without microsoft's help. It was so easy, in fact even if my xbox was under warranty I would just do it myself. I found this youtube link that helped me out with the basics, and then I followed another guide that showed me the types of bolts and washers I would need for the xclamp mod.

It's funny to think that just the xclamp is such a bad design, in fact the whole mod is just about removing them which makes it better in combination with the pressure from the added washers.

This is the youtube video I followed: Youtube

It's actually funny even before this I had CD read errors all the time but now it has been acting brand new. The 360 is from Jan 2006 manufacturer's date.

nboy I have the same problem on one of my boxes, I am going to use the video you posted to try and fix it. Did you replace the thermal compound on yours? Also could you link me to the link that shows the types of bolts and washers I need. Oh and have you had any problems since you did this? Thanks!

Yes, I did replace the thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5, the old stuff is cheap thermal compound. I have had absolutely no problems with this, in fact the xbox seems to run just as good as before.
