So I've read that the DVD player will only do 480p over component according to the internet.. but I cannot get it to display in 16:9 and/or fill up my entire TV. It puts vertical letterboxes around the image. All of my games play just fine in 1080p widescreen and if I connect a regular DVD player via component it fills the entire screen just fine as well.

The on screen options do not change the format of the image outside the letterbox, it will change inside those black bars but will not extend past them to fill the entire screen.

Any ideas? I have an HDMI cable for my xbox but it sees my TV as a monitor instead of a TV so it wont pass audio over the cable.

so you have black bars on top and bottom? or top bottom and on the sides.

Letter box is top and bottom.

No, just on the sides, vertical pillar boxing

If I set my TV to 'full' mode instead of 'native' it will fix it I just found out but wtf would that be the case?

I don't use my 360 as a dvd player. But its possible the xbox simply plays that disc at its native format. If its is 4:3 it'll output as a 4:3 image with vertical pillars. Dvd players have the option to stretch the image out to fill up the whole screen. I don't have any thing that's 4:3 to try that theory. Maybe you do. TV series older ones usually are 4:3. compare it to something you know for sure its 16:9

Interesting, on my TV "Full" mode is 'normal' mode. If native is in the middle of the screen, as you describe, isn't that because the source resolution (480) is less than the resolution of your TV (720p or 1080p)? Makes sense to me that it would do that in a 'native' mode.

Sounds like the 360 is outputting anamorphic 16x9. When it's pillar boxed like you describe are things tall and thin? It's almost like the 360 thinks you are connected to a 4x3 TV. Try component from the 360.

Actually it does this on my TV too. I have it set up via component and it is indeed outputting HD, but for some reason my TV doesn't 'auto fill' the TV with that signal even though HD channels do. But when I set my TV up to force widescreen it looks fine. It's not distorted or anything.

Yeah it's all skewed, tall and thin. If I set my TV up to handle it, it works fine.

Even stranger, it auto-adjusts when I go back to my dashboard to the proper setting in my TV. I have to manually set it on the TV for DVD though... lame.

Yep, it won't upscale DVD over component, and does upscale the games, and as you have discovered, the TV has to be used to do it. BTW, what TV is this? It may just be an audio setting on the TV or 360 causing the HDMI problem, or your set is not HDCP compliant.

Looks like you are far from being alone SurfingMatt says you are hosed till the NXE update arrives, and according to his time frame, it is late
It's an issue with the xbox360 NXE update, there are thousands of other users with the same issue, they update to NXE then totally lose audio, before the update..audio was fine but post NXE audio is completely lost.

This isn't just Toshiba in particular it effects other manufacturers as well. It's not your tv's fault, there is nothing wrong with your tv it is the NXE update at fault. Microsoft is aware of the issue and a fix is on the way via a patch. when it's available is up in the air but it should be ready before the month of december is over.
