Long story short have had two RRODs and the third unit DVD went out. Bought new one from ThumbMonkey and swapped out daughter card and dvd has worked for 9 months. My son told me that MW2 stopped working and now just about none of the games will play. However, Halo 3 and Assassin Creed 2 work just fine.

So not sure why two games can work just fine but 5-7 other games will not load up or freeze up etc....

So I'm stuck not completely sure it's the dvd unit. So the thought is to upgrade to the Elite model. Although it seems like I'm rewarding MS for making/using shoddy hw. The dvd unit I ordered from Thumb Monkey only came with 30 day, need to check if mfg warranty is longer.

Anyone else having issues with dvd unit Hitachi LG 78FK GDR-3120L?

Thanks!

I would say out of all the drives I've come across while repairing a few hundred 360s, the Hitachis have always been the worst. I have seen a lot of BenQ Drives too but the Hitachis always seem to have something tricky about them.

If it were me I would just copy the key from the Hitachi to a BenQ replacement and spoof the BenQ's firmware to look like a Hitachi. Of course, I imagine doing that could also get you banned.

If you can get your hands on a new xbox you will probably get a liteon drive, and I haven't seen too many of those in for repair. Liteons are newer too so I'll give it another year and see how many are coming in.
