360 controller takes on KB/M in CS:S showdown

This is mostly just a story but w/ some Qs:
I was on IRC today, talking to somebody when the issue of gamepad vs. kb/m arose. This kid swears up and down that his 360 controller is better for shooters than my keyboard and mouse. I tell him that lots of people are used to the controller, but I prefer my kb/m. He tells me he'd be able to wipe the floor with me and it's not just a preference, but that gamepads are just better period.

Well I tell him to plug his friggin controller into his PC and prove it. Well apparently he's not a PC gamer at all. I told him I'd take him on at CS:S, and he agreed. He'll be getting the game soon, solely to attempt to prove that the gamepad is better than kb/m. He says 'just give me a week to know the maps man'.

So I've been playing this game for 2 years now, but didn't have the heart to tell him. He's expecting to kick my ass after 1-2 weeks of playing with a gamepad vs. my 2 years of experience w/ a fully customized G5. Who would just throw $30 away like this to prove a point, and lose?

Does the 360 controller even work with CS:S properly? I know it has drivers that work fine but I'm not sure how well it plays with certain games. Doesn't matter... I'm pretty excited for this.

I'm pretty sure I will. I hadn't played in a while so I got on the other day... well I ended up getting booted from 2 servers under suspicion of using an aim hack. I don't think he has a chance

lmao, that reminds me of FPS Doug from PurePwnage. So I guess what he said was true in CSS. Do you know if that's the case for Battlefield 2 though?

Admins are generally not that strict on BF2 from what I've seen. Since it's such a team oriented game it's really hard to tell if somebody's doing a little 'too' well themselves, and it's not just the better team. Ya know?

Well when someone cheats in BF2 it's so obvious. I've seen people go 88-0 as infantry, and that looks a little suspicious.

REGULAR UPDATES PLEASE!

I wanna know what happens, heck, if I'm not at work I might even like to watch.
Just give me a couple hours to let Steam download all the updates I've been putting off.

He must be used to the autoaim helpers that are thrown into console FPSers, he's not going to get that here unless he's using his time to find cheats

On the flip side it would be funny if he was completely f***ing with you and is lying out the ass. It really would be great if he was some awesome CSS player and it just making up this story about the gamepad just to kick your ass and make you feel really awful because you'd think you just got owned by a gamepad.

Although I hope its real and you do kick his ass, I also know way too many people who don't know how inferior game controllers are to the mouse.

lol no worries. Nothing will happen for a few weeks as he has some basketball camp and other things. So he'll get the game after that, learn the maps, and then we'll see what happens. If we decide a time exactly I'll post it here so some can spectate So start updating, as you have plenty of time

One on one would be close. If there were 16 controllers going against 16 KB/M it would be no contest (assuming same skill). The KB/M will kill the controllers.

One on one is different. He'll know the general area you're coming from and can ready the gamepad. Will he show you proof that he's using a gamepad?

We haven't worked out a system or anything like that... I think he's a gung-ho 360 fanboy from talking to him so I have no doubt he truly thinks he can be me. Even if he 'cheated' and used a kb/m he'd probably still get ganked.

LOL, this should be good. Like you said, even if he does use kb/m your extra experience will trump that. Just remember to play on a VAC server in case he wants to go a step further and use a hack. CS:S is only $20 now, BTW.

I love playing with my gamepad more than a keyboard/mouse, but seriously there is no way that a person who uses a gamepad will beat a person who uses a keyboard/mouse...especially in fps games...maybe other genre's...but not fps.

Man, I played the Lost Planet demo on Xbox at BestBuy yesterday. How the hell can anyone play an FPS with that controller? I can't imagine how anyone can even come close to beating a KB/M player. It is so cumbersome and the ability to react quickly is greatly reduced IMO.

Granted, this is really only one of very few FPS games I have tried on a console, and after a lot of practice someone might be able to get decent with a controller, but wow, awkward does not even begin to describe how it felt for me.

I hate watching people play FPSs on consoles. The damn cross hairs goes up, then over, then bang. Oh for christ sake... I'm sure there are better players at it, and they aren't that bad, but how the hell do they think they can compare to a mouse!

It's really funny watching people say that game controllers are better than KB/M, especially WHILE they're playing on a console. I love it. If I ever got an XB360 I would definitely have to get that KB/M adapter.

That said... how are you going to do 1v1 in CS:S? All the default maps are too big... maybe you could do iceworld, or a custom aim_ map.

cs_office and de_dust are good 1v1 maps, lots of hiding spots and lots of open area's.
