360 connection issue

So I recently got an HDTV LCD with HDMI inputs.

I wanted to connect my Xbox directly to the TV via HDMI instead of deal with the component cable bundle. When I do this I get different options under display than with the component. It *looks* high-def but it gives me screen resolutions like 1920x1080 instead of saying 1080p like when I use component. Furthermore, I get absolutely no audio from my TV with this connection. If I use the regular component cables it looks fine and audio works through my receiver. The section for screen format is blacked out as well.

I cannot connect them both at the same time because the 360 component bundle is too big and covers up part of the HDMI port.

Furthermore, all DVD's that I play via component have letterbox and no option to switch to full/stretch like if you play videos streaming off your computer. I cannot get the DVD to go 16:9 for some reason.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Is there something wrong with my xbox? Is there a setting on my TV?

This has to bet a setting problem, both the xbox and the TV. Can you update the firmware of your TV and what model is it? Many TVs limit what you can do zoom/stretch wise if fed an HD input.

Also need to know receiver and how it is connected. The DVD being letter boxed is correct for aspect ratios greater than 1.85 (look on the DVD title to see what the aspect is).

This is most certainly a problem with your TV, considering the 360 works just fine with mine. Try switching which HDMI port you're using on the TV - it could be that port #1 is designated for PC usage.

1920x1080 vs 1080p isn't a problem, though - they're the exact same thing. Use the expanded color settings in the 360 control panel if the TV insists on believing it's seeing a PC.

Finally, if you want to connect HDMI and optical at the same time, you can, but you'll need a special dongle that's specially designed for the purpose.

Thanks for the replies.

I have 3 HDMI ports and one PC port on my TV so I think it should know the difference. I have tried all 3 HDMI ports with the same luck.

There is no receiver in the picture here, this is simply XBOX360 -> HDMI -> My TV.

This exact same DVD is widescreen on my friend's setup via HDMI and HDTV.

TV is a Toshiba 40inch 40RV525U

Stupid problem, but thankfully it's easily fixable. You can do the crack the cable case mod (which I personally detest) or you can buy MS's HDMI kit which includes a dongle to allow you to get analog + optical audio in addition to HDMI video.

You can probably find a used one easily, I know I recently upgraded to an HDMI receiver so my kit is gathering dust somewhere.

Not sure how helpful, but I went with HDMI recently to my TV from xbox 360 ($5 ebay cable) and audio was ok on the tv, but only went to the receiver (outputs from tv to input on receiver) when I'd have at least a single notch of volume on the tv; with its volume on 0 it would output nothing back to the receiver. The end result is that my receiver is most of the volume and the tv is one notch, which is annoying because the receiver has a very slight lag in audio, so if I want to engage quietly, there is a small echo; with louder volume the receiver completely drowns out the tv, so no worries.

Thanks, I was going to have to do this anyway I think. I have an optical out on my TV that I was going to run to my receiver but since my video signal isn't passing audio I might just get this kit.

Just to clarify, if I choose 1920x1080 on the monitor selection on my Xbox, that is equivalent to 1080p correct?

Any reason you lads can think of why my TV would handshake w/ HDMI as a monitor instead of a TV?
