36" Sony WEGA needs a slight adjustment.........

Probably depends on what the rest of the room looks like. If a POS stand is going to stick out like a sore thumb, getting something nice from the get go might be the way to go.

I'm not saying what he should buy or how much he should spend, but it would be hard for me to agree that it's pointless for him to do it right the first time.

Well, I even went one better. I found an oak furniture outlet near my house that I'd bought a book case from before. They changed names, but still the same.

They had some GREAT oak stands/entertainment centers. I'm about 99% sure I'm gonna go w/ this one they had that is about PERFECT for my needs.

I don't have pics, but in a nutshell, it's a couple of half-width lookin' oak bookcases, each with its own pair of doors on the bottom. A bridge acrossed the top that can change widths (thus future-proofing things for me as I'd never put anything larger than a 42" panel in my family room due to viewing distance limits) and a simple oak base w/ glass shelves...(which can be used with or w/o glass doors if ventilation problems arise).

It solves......

#1.) my current TV dilema

#2.) any future TV dilema (assuming we're still lookin' at panels in the next few years)

#3.) my wife's desire for more media storage (books, framed pics, cd's, dvd's, etc.)

#4.) my wife's absolute loathing of the "Buck Rogers in the 25th century", black, silver, glass....look.

And while I know some folks thing that EC's are old-school, I'm gonna go out on a limb & say that oak is timeless. I also have a vaulted ceiling at that wall where the TV will go so I could stack 2 of these suckers on top of eachother & they *still* wouldn't touch the ceiling.

All in all I think it'll the best move I could make!! :thumbsup: (Glad I went to a furniture store!)
 
That's very similar to what I'll be buying. Narrower center stand for now to accomodate the 36" CRT. (Looks like the 2 sides and top bridge can accomodate 60" wide base & possibly larger if necessary for future)

The sides will be a little more open style similar to a bookshelf but the bottom 1/3 of each section will have double doors for some hidden storage.

Gotta take some measurements tomorrow! My current EC is 52W x 45H x 18D. The new setup will be significantly larger, for sure!

Closest pic would be kinda' like this, but in a more natural oak finish instead of antiqued.
 
those TVs are a bitch to move esp down narrow staircases! You need at least two strong people that can wrap their hands around the tv
 
The best was when we were watching the Dallas/Giants game and my bro-in-law said how great the Football games look in HD on his new Pioneer 506PU.

He, then went on to say how he had to admit, he'll miss this TV as the regular TV channels look much better on the CRT than his new Pio!!!!

I smiled and said........."I know, that's precisely why I returned mine!"

when I worked as a warehouse guy at CC they sold a display 40" Sony CRT flat front HDTV thing when I was the only warehouse guy there. We had some tools to make it easier but it was a bitch to wrestle that thing by myself.
 
I'd actually love to see a 40" in person.

Though 36" is certainly the largest I'd ever consider owning, I'd still just love to see it in person!!!!

too bad we're into the days of 103" Plasmas!!!!

I could seriously enjoy my current setup for a solid decade, barring any major advances in HD panel technology that would be able to compensate UNCOMPROMISINGLY for aspect ratio and SD/HD pixel differences.
 
hell, im sittin on a 51 inch. love it. could never go back, and now that i am hd, im definitely not going back.
 
Well, I meant 36" is the largest in a CRT that I'd own.

(I assume your 51" is not a CRT as 40" is the largest I've ever heard of)



Considering that (in NTSC, 4:3 mode) I'm watching the equivalent of a 44" Panel TV, I'm looking at a pretty large set at a 7' viewing distance! 😎

Could be CRT rear projection.

No lie!!


As my couch & loveseat are set up.......the seat most perpendicular to the TV right now (i.e. worst viewing angle) has got to be under 30 degrees to the plane of the face of the TV and I can still see it easily. (Actually might be even easier than my 27" as the 27 was not flat and this 36" is truly flat!)

CRT forevvaaaarrrrrrrr!!!
 
All's well now but I have a slight issue bothering me.

I noticed that this monster 36" WEGA has a slight bend in horizontal lines on the left side.

It's not even noticeable on full-screen, but w/ letterbox TV/movies, you can tell that the left edge (left 2 to 3 inches) has a slight bend downward.

I corrected some of it by adjusting the whole screen (tilt adjust) to the right a couple degrees, but there are no other geometry adjustments on this TV (KV-36FS100) and I can still see it.

(Sorry in advance for no pics)

Should I have a TV guy come out & see what he can do??

Had the same issues with my sony. Do some googling for sony service menus. There are plenty of sites out there covering how to get into it, and what the settings are. I fixed my geometry this way.

If you have an unshielded speaker next to the TV, that could cause it. But if it's internal geometry being off, you need to go into service mode to fix it. On my sony to get into it you press display-5-vol up-power from when the TV is off.

But it's the easiest way to screw it up permanently if you don't know what youre doing.

And since you're so uninformed that you STILL think there is something wrong with HDTVs displaying SDTV, I wouldnt go anywhere near the service menu.
 
Ahhhhhhhh............

I had actually thought about that.........(I know there's a lot of this "secret menu" stuff.....aka "service menu") but I hadn't ever messed with that stuff due to all the paranoia out there.

I wonder if there'd be any geometry settings for just one side??? (Actually, I might be able to sacrifice a little on both sides but it's definitely 90% the left side)

It probably wouldn't be obvious to me (the wife can't really see it unless I point it out to her) except that these TV's are sooooooooo FLAT!!!

There are, you just have to know what does what. A little googling will get you on the right track. Just don't mess with anything your not 100% sure of what it does.
