36.7GB raptors jump in price on newegg

They used to be $115 yesterday now they are $132. Anyone know if this is because these are the 2nd generation raptors?

I'll wait until June or so and buy my Raptor from NewEgg. By then all the old stock should be depleted and several batches of the Raptors will have been received and sold. I really want to guarantee that I get a new one when I dish out the $$$. My patience should be well rewarded.

lol June? I doubt the speed increase of the new version will be that great... though if u are concerned with sound it may be. the only downside is I don't think the new version gets a 5 year warrenty I think it only gets a 1 year =(

Or just get a 74GB one and be guaranteed its the second gen one... 🙂 (I couldn't wait and did this myself....) so when you are buying the 37GB ones in June, I'll be buying my second 74GB one and RAIDing them... so much for patience... 😉

Yeah, I don't NEED it either. Technically, I don't NEED a computer at all. But I WANT it. I want it now!!!! 😀

Yes I do, I need a computer. No computer = no work = no money.

Raptor = do more work = more money? Well, toys are nice too 😉

The prices on these have really fluctuated over the last 3 days. Sunday night, I set up a wishlist including 2 Raptors. They were sitting at $117 at the time, I'm pretty sure.

Went back on Monday to get the order started, and they'd gone up to $125 apiece. Now they're up to $132? Hmm...strange stuff. 🙂

Well it's supply and demand. Newegg would be stupid not to take advantage of the hype. Those 36 gigers sure spin fast, but the 74 gig's should give a more substantial speed increase due to the denser platters.

Personally I would rather have 2 200 7200 gig's in a RAID 0. About the same price as 2 36 1000 raptors, but with the massive amount of disk space. Performance isn't going to be noticably less for the majority of uses anyways. 😉

platter density is the same on 72gb, they simply added a 2nd platter.

Same here. I've already got lots of EIDE disk space, I just want one really fast QUIET SATA drive to boot and run from. I can't wait.

Ok. Can't argue with personal preference! And you're right on the massive storage that would result.

Depends on what you mean by uses. The performance increase across the board is readily apparent, without even resorting to one benchmark program. I went from one Seagate 120 gig Barracuda V (7200 RPM) to two Seagate 120 gig Barracuda V's in RAID 0 to two 36 gig Raptors in RAID 0 to two 74 gig Raptors in RAID 0, and each step provided faster and faster results. My personal preference is for the best speed possible, and a pair of 74 gig Raptors makes me very happy. I think the only thing faster would be a pair of 15k RPM SCSI drives in RAID 0.

You missed the point of the thread. Everyone is quite happy that the prices go UP. That signals the end of the slower 36 GB drives and means the newer 36 GB drives will be released soon. Pointing to links where the price hasn't gone up will just depress people.

I think that all Raptors (old and new) will have a 5-year warranty. THis drive is marketed in the enterprise class.

Who missed the point? Can you point me to anything that shows the higher prices at Newegg indicate for sure that the drives they have are 2nd generation Raptors? All we know for sure is that the price has gone up. Why they have gone up is unknown, unless you have some information (other than a guess) to the contrary.

Dullard saddens me... 2nd gen 36gb raptors are not shipping any time soon...and current pricing has no significance w/2nd gen raptor production.

Move on folks...nothing to see here.

This whole thread is about the original poster's question:
Anyone know if this is because these are the 2nd generation raptors?
Newb54 HOPES the price increase (linked with the out of stock) signals the coming of the new Raptors. No this isn't for sure. Nothing is certain until they day the drives actually are released. However we do know two things: (1) WD said they won't release the new Raptors until the old ones are out of stock and (2) the new Raptors will cost a few bucks more than the old Raptors. Other than that we know nothing. So far Newegg has met the two criteria - but you are correct that it isn't a guarantee that the new Raptors are coming. I just chimed in saying that I have the same hopes as the original poster, but that Schadenfroh's link to Raptors in stock at a low price is depressing.

One take (read guess) on this:

1. Many know about the new Raptors from news sources on the net.

2. Many of those don't know that the 36.7GB models for sale today aren't the new Raptors.

3. People are buying the old models in droves thinking they are new Raptors.

4. As demand goes up so does price.

5. Let them buy all the old Raptors, perhaps it will hasten the arrival to market of the new ones.

🙂

I think that StorageReview is the only credible place that has mentioned that WD will transition the technology in the 74GB Raptor back into the 36GB model. Other than that breif mention, there is NO OTHER CONFIRMATION. Heck, WD is not even acknowledging the WD2500PB/WD2500LB right now ... even though NewEgg (and probably, others) have these new models in stock.
