As someone that now lives comfortably off of a business I started with virtually no investment capital, I would say that $30k should be put in an investment account, and the rest should be spent on a trip to hawaii. :D

You could start any number of businesses with $35K. I know a guy who does tree cutting and all he spent to get started was the price of a chain saw.

Think about businesses that have low overhead so you won't blow through your money too fast. If I was going to start a business, I'd try to find something with low overhead that caters to wealthy people. House-sitting would be a good example.

Depends on what type of business your trying to start...when you say any there really is a diffrence between a taco truck, small store, and a motel.

FWIW, my dad started his auto shop with next to no money, a garage (inherited from my grandparents) and a bunch of tools. He's now the only ASE-certified non-franchise shop in my home town, and the customers are rolling in and out with such frequency that my stepmom quit her job as a grocery store manager and works for him now. :)

So to back up the previous point, it's pretty dependent on what you're planning to do, what other resources you have, and what abilities you have.

Depending on where you live, $35 000 won't really allow you to get into any type of franchise unless it's a dollar store. However, you can open up any type of other store. Keep in mind that the service industry pays the most because the profit is 100%. So if you stick to that you're fine.
