3500 Clawhammer to 3800 Venice

In the Hot Deals forum there's a deal for an AMD 64 3800 Venice for 150 US. IS this worth upgrading from my 3500 Clawhammer? I can't get a dual core Opteron since they're still over 300 US.

Speedwise, there is not going to be much difference.

With the Venice core you will gain a smaller die, SSE3, and an updated memory controller. You will be able run more than two sticks in dual channel at the full speed. Before it would drop you down to DDR 333 2T speeds.

On Zipzoomfly.com you can get a brand-new 3800+ Venice for $149 with free fedex...however you would barely notice the difference unless you overclock, in which case the Venice should have a lot more headroom.

I would say not much unless you are going to OC. I would say wait for the big prices drops next month and pick up an X2 then....

3800+ is almost a maxed out Venice. You'll get up to 400Mhz max out of it I think. San Diego 3700+ are where it's at...or Opteron 146s.
