I'd say the 290 is the best bang for your buck. I got one of these DD edition cards for $180. Now I see the reviews and I'm shocked o_O; Had no idea it was that good.

That said, if the OP can just wait a while -- you might as well wait and see what's out next year.
Well good for you if that's the case, cause here in my country, we do not have those kind of deals plus electricity costs way too much for anybody here who owns an R9 series card.

I ordered Asus R9 290 DCII OC for $240 after MIR. Oh well, so much for the willingness to wait. :D

I was hoping a $249 960Ti with 4GB VRAM and near 290 performance. Wishful thinking maybe.

good buy there. for some its not the matter of waiting but rather what makes them happy about the purchased item :)

it makes no sense whatsoever to spend more than the $240 for the 290 linked by RussianSensation to go to a 970. For what? To gain 5% fps for an extra $60? Why wait for a card that performs like a 290 maybe, one day, perhaps, in the future, when you can just buy a 290 right now for $240... I remember only just a year ago now GTX 760s were going for $250 and the 290 is a hell of a lot more card for that same price

R9 270 Low end?

I was planing to buy a R7 260/265 and I thought I was going mid end gaming...

R7 260 Entry Level
R7 270 Low End
R9 280 Bridge
R9 290 Mid Range
R9 290x Upper Mid Range
GTX 970 Upper Mid Range
GTX 980 High End

That's how I see it. I consider ~$300 mid range.

Depends on who you talk to of course though.

GTX 970 only makes sense to me if you want Nvidia's feature set (which decreased a lot in value now that AMD has most of those things on it's own cards), or HDMI 2.0 (Very high value to me currently) for 4K gaming on an HDTV.

Otherwise, R9 290 makes much more sense.

There are deals on R9 290/290X series all the time. It's not even hard to find them, every 2-3 days there is some new deal.

Asus R9 290X is $280 with 6% off and $30 MIR.

There might be a way to get an additional $25 credit on top of that with the AMEX / Twitter deal for Newegg:

IMO, if 960 is $249 and only has 2GB of VRAM, it's a total failure. I think NV will make it closer to 970M with 3GB of VRAM.

I do not have an Amex card. So that's a no-go for me.

The 290 was $260 after taxes and rebates. 290x was $302. I decided the 290 would be more than sufficient for my 1200p needs. I don't think it's worth it for me. Better to put that $40 towards my next upgrade.

Great deals anyway
