35% sales tax????

I was checking my t-mobile bill and I found out that I was being charged a one time equipment sale sales tax for $12.37! The thing is, the handset was onl $34.99!!!
I called in customer service asking them regarding the sales tax, and I was told the government calculated the sales tax for the sales of equipment. Whoaaa... I'm pretty pissed off right now.
Anyone know a number I can call regarding this tax matter???

Oh, I'm in Houston, TX if that matters. The regular sales tax is only 8.25% here in TX.

Maybe they charged tax on the full MSRP of the phone?

Wouldn't that be illegal??

no. the price you actually pay for the phone is subsidised (by t-mobile), so you do end up paying tax on the full msrp of the phone.

hmmm, okay... that sucks though. The good deal I thought I had isn't so good anymore now.
