$3400 for Wisdom teeth removal? [Thread necro]

None of them are. Doc rated it a 4 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of difficulty also. I figure general anesthetic will certainly bring up the cost, but the price seems a little high, to put it nicely.

Sounds high to me too. I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time when I was 18. I think the doctor said it was 100 per non-impacted tooth and like 450 each for impacted. This was back in 1997 though.

That's nuts. I just got a quote from my dentist last weekend for 3 wisdom teeth to be removed at a cost of $108.00 per tooth. None of them are impacted.

I'm not going to have it done though, I enjoy my wisdom teeth. They help me chew. 🙂 But $3,400 is just rediculous. Go to Mexico and have it done for like $200. They're certified the same as U.S. dentists.

Dentists are expensive. Oral Surgeons are even worse.

Most people don't realize it, either because they've kept up good care of their teeth and don't need the services, or they've had good insurance.

$3400 sounds high but not out of the question. Have you done some comparison shopping?

I'm guessing that's not a normal doctor ... chances are you have some issues with your wisdoms (i.e. impacted as said above) and chances are you'll need surgery and anesthesia. Personally, mine was more than that (thank god for insurance) as I had two sideways impacted teeth, I was actually fully unconcious during the procedure.

Channel Lock needle nose players= $17
Makers Mark whiskey=$25
rubbing alcohol, cotton balls and gauze=$2

optional MacGyver style:
Rivet gun, spackle, and strike anywhere matches.

I'm glad I got all my serious dental work done when I was under my parents insurance (braces, retainer, wisdom teeth, etc...).

I have my own dental insurance (separate from health insurance), but im not sure how good it is.

I've had three taken out at $100 a pop by an Oral Surgeon. No cutting necessary, just a local and a yank.

Shop around. It's time we let these medical professionals know we're looking for the best price. We price shop everything else, why not this?

yeah, I had all of mine taken out under my parent's insurance when i was 17. This was in 95 I think. I think it was a few hundred bucks out of pocket.

Only a fool pays $3400 for wisdom teeth removal. Take that $3400 and book a vacation out of the country. Enjoy your vacation and towards end of your stay, pay less than $100 to have your teeth removed by dentist in that country. It's really absurd what we pay for medical care in this country. Dental industry is out of control.

Not yet, but looks like I'll have to. Sucks that I'll have to pay another consultation fee for each place I visit though. The place I went to today charged me $100 for the 10 minute visit alone (even with X-Rays covered).

Agreed. I knew I was in trouble when the parking lot was filled with Lexus SUV's, BMW's, and the like 😛

I just had 2 wisdom tooth extracted.. using local and pull. One was impacted.

Total bill 140 with everything (about 100+40 for supplies or whatever).

that was for 2, i have one more to take out, thats for later, and then one that requires oral surgery.

Shop around.. my previous dentist quoted me between 400-600 for each.

I had 4 pulled, 2 were impacted. Laughing gas made it a breeze. 😉
Oh, and the fact that I got paid $350 for it.

Here in Austin are 2 companies that regularly offer free wisdom teeth removal if you participate in a study of a new pain meds. It involves a 24hr stay, which was annoying, but saving the $$$ was more than worth it.

Take a copy of your x-ray with you and shop around so you don't duplicate the expense. Call up oral surgeons, ask for a price and tell them you have a recent x-ray if they need it. To have my (4) wisdom teeth pulled I it cost around $1200 with general anasthetic of which I paid about $600 (dental insurance ain't what it used to be.) I thought mine was overpriced, total procedure took about 30 minutes. I know someone who was quoted $1000 for a root canal and that's with insurance.

Try going to a different dentist. The optometrist I went to when I had eye insurance would charge me something like $350 for an exam. When I lost that insurance, I found out that going to a regular cheap place I could get an eye exam for $80. I imagine dentists are the same way.

That is seriously high. Mine was ~$600 ( 1200 without insurance ). Thats 2 regular extractions ( upper jaw ) and 2 impacted ( bottom jaw ) with general anesthesia. He had to break out the bottom two into shards. This was in DFW.
