3400+ Clawhammer detected as 3200+

theman is correct.. I can't set an 11X multiplier, which is convincing me more and more that I do in fact have a 3200+ Clawhammer.

blckgrffn brough up the point that it could be my motherboard.. is that a realistic possibility since everything else is acting normally??

I dont know if this is the answer to your problem or not, but here is a guess...

AMD's early number rating system is ambiguous. (no im not knocking amd, I love them also)... but
For nearly every rating....There were 2 amd cpus with the same rating. Here is the difference...
The standard model is a cpu with a X.Y Mhz rating with 512 L2 cache.
The is also a model with X.(Y-2) Mhz with 1MB L2 cache.
Both of them were rated at the same zz00+ speed bin.

So, possibly your 3400+ could be...
a 2.2Mhz cpu + 512L2 cache or...
a 2.0Mhz cpu + 1MB L2 cache.
But... the Clawhammer 3400+ is supposed to run at 2.2GHz with 1MB L2 cache (1MB L2 is what is reported in all the above programs). Since I paid for a Clawhammer, it should run at 2.2GHz at stock speeds.

Uzair: I will take off the heatsink soon, and let you know.

Sundevb, a 3400+ with a full 1MB cache does run at 2.0GHz. The 512K ones are the ones that run at 2.2GHz. Mine runs at 2.2GHz with 512K. Since the 3400+ designator has been replaced by the 3500+ designator for desktops, check out the specs.

Doesn't Sandra have a utility that it gives you the model numbe, then the actual PR number, as well as HTT, bus etc?

Here I go, I am the proud seller of this cpu, I got this cpu used from another trader in FS/FT section of this forum, I had it in my K8n neo platinum about 2 or 3 weeks ago, it never had any problem recognizing it as a 3400+, it is one of the earliest C0 core and I never overclock and modify it, according to the previous seller, he didn't overclock or modify the cpu either, I am glad to help if you have any problem, LMK

So could the problem be the motherboard? For some reason when I set the multiplier to beyond 10X it doesn't take.. I've never read anything like this before but is it possible?

The BIOS and everything else on the face of the planet keeps screaming at me that it's a 3200+ (including Sandra).

Thanks for responding hitmanx2. Any help is appreciated...

Remove the heatsink and give us the stepping.. Or take a pic.

Ok, here is the pic of the chip by popular demand. For those too lazy to click:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64
ADA3400AEP5AO
AAAIC 0326TPMW
9434645240089

pic2

That aint no 3400. 3400 has 11X multi by default. Sounds like CPU string was reprogrammed. Easy done with CBID... but multis impossible to change.

Send it to AMD. got a full pic?

That pic2 looks to me like the cap has been switched on it.

look at the 2 dents on each side.... looks fishy to me. looks like a 3400+ cap was glued on a 3200+ cpu to increase the resale value. 🙁

I PMed him a couple of hours ago. I suggest you do the same since I'm guessing you also overpaid by $40 or so.. and if he does not clear this up quickly I think you should post in the FS/FT forums here and at HardOCP since he is selling lots of stuff and you dealt with him directly.

Really mad right now.

I pmed him about the problem, it seem that this cpu is actually his friend's cpu, I hope he can do something though.

Wow, that is surprising that someone would actually go to the trouble to switch the IHS to make it appear to be a faster CPU.
I am guessing that someone will claim it was removed for better temps and a better one "accidentally" got put on.

The original seller (who solder to hitmanx2) says that my motherboard is faulty, and that he did not change the heatspreader as he does not know how to do so.

Suggestions on how to proceed?

tell em your 3400 is not a 3400.. running @ 3200.. probably from asian bust.. you want to confirm and a new CPU. They prolly just send a new one anyway.

OTOH just set HTT to 220 and you got a 3400.
