My mom let my little cousin spend the weekend at her house and let on her computer, which was not running any antivirus software. ( she just got the system a few days ago). He was downloading all kind of things from kazaa and such. So I downloaded AVG antivirus for her and ran a complete scan and it found over 34,000 infected files out of about 77,000 files total

Eek! 34,000 files, something tells me someone will be formatting and reinstalling shortly :)

It amazes me how many people participate in dangerous activities such as downloading files using file sharing apps and don't run any antivirus software.

Unbelievable. I'd do a complete re-install with that many infections in case there are some clever trojans that have disguised themselves.

I hope you managed to save any critical data. How old was this cousin?

Before you reformat try this. Run your aniti-virus software and see if it identifies what files and which virus. Save the list to floppy and print a hard copy. Now try to clean the files using your anti-virus software, you might try Norton or check the web for on line virus checkers. Rerun your original anti-virus software and check if you have a clean system. Sometimes these trojans and worms are just nusenses and have no effect on your computer. Make sure your system is clean as I could send bad files to others on your address book. When you get a clean system, BACK IT UP!!!!!!

I'd only recommend something like that to a VERY advanced user who could make the determination about possible side effects (it would help if sean2002 could post what viri where found). My advice; Nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Only 12 viruses??? Geez, it's been many years since I've had a virus actually infect my computer - that was back when there was one computer in the house, which was a 486. I've been sent some by jerks out there on the net, but NAV always found them right away and prevented them from doing any damage.

Nor did I....until I got infected by the Nimda virus a couple of years back. Now I always run an up-to date version of McAfee. I haven't been infected since because McAfee has blocked all infection attempts (been about 5-10 in the past 2 years).

If it's a new system, it should have a restore CD. Nuke it from orbit!!!

ive used morpheus etc. for since like forever also. only been infected like once or twice. only simple lil scrpts, like reboot on startup of windows etc. nothing real serious. but 34,000 infected files seems sort of....overwhelming. i was 13 yesterday and i dont remember downloading anything that would have some virii krap
