32x8 or 16x8 - 16-chip memory?

Hello,

So I'm ordering 256MB PC100 16-chip memory from my supplier.

He says 16x8 is 16 chip and 32x8 isn't 16 chip.

I googled and I found both come in variations of 16 chip and 8 chip and so it doesnt matter.

My question is: What is a defiant specification/dimension that can tell if memory is double-sided "16 chip" or single-sided "8-chip" for both desktop and laptop memory.

Thanks in advanced for your help.

Thanks for the infor Arcane, so what other dimensions are more compatible with newer machines?

Are newer machines back-ward compatible with the 16x8 chips?

Do dimensions tell you if the memory is double or single-sided? If not, what does?

Thanks so much.

Check the memory upgrade selector at Crucial, Kingston, etc for your laptop.
Get the same spec. memory as they list.

crap..pc100 ...
The fact is that the older systems cannot support the newer, higher density, lower cost chips. The computer's chipset can only support the memory technology it was designed with, and the majority of systems out there only support lower density modules. Most users, especially when they are unaware about the importance of chip density and compatibility, will choose the lowest priced memory with specifications that LOOKS to be identical. But there's nothing more frustrating than trying to install your new memory only to find that it doesn't work with your system.
pc100 ..list your mobo/laptop/desktop ..as Blain said go crucial/kingston cofigurator for best results
