32GB SSD useable?

Question: Could I use a 32gb SSD for OS?

This one is on sale at Newegg.CA for $69.99 - $25MIR = $45:

Patriot Torx 2 32GB SSD:

Seems like a really good deal on a smaller SSD...

Is 32GB too small for any functionality? I have a 1tb WD Blue HDD if that helps 🙂

I don't have Win7 yet, but I'm sure I'll be ordering that soon..

Very helpful link, thank you 🙂

I think I'll pull the trigger on it, it'll tide me over for a year or two until 128GB SSD's are a bit more reasonable 🙂

40 GB or less is annoying...but useable. I have a few of the Intel G2 40GB value SSD's installed as primary OS drives...and I still have an HDD for larger apps. I would hold out for a 64 GB minimum....BLACK FRIDAY.

For your main machine (assuming) 32GB is probably too small. While the OS will fit, not much will fit after and you'll still end up using your HDD for a lot. Plus a 32GB drive is a lot slower than a 64GB or 128GB drive. I use an 80GB as my C drive and thats enough, I could live with 64GB but no less.

problem is how windows keeps the old updates. vista was the worst you'd end up with a few gb of junk. and when you do an upgrade vista -> 7 -> 8 you end up with more junk and of course the upgrade process needs a bit of extra space - so 32gb would be tight - doable - but tight. remember 32gb might have 10-25% reserve so that could go from 32gb to formatted 25gb which is super tight. by default and 8gb box reserves about 8gb for swap and 8gb for hibernation (powercfg -h off to remove hiberfil.sys)

I would avoid this drive. Its too small. Your windows install will balloon to around 30 gigs after updates. I know your budget is tight but consider something like this to hold you over:

That drive you list actually has a higher dollar per gig ratio than the two I post above and about the same level of performance. 1.4 for the torx drive whilst the vertex is 1.1

And if you can pony up the extra cash, this is very very hard to beat imo

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm almost glad it sold out, I would have had a hard time saying no to $45 for an SSD...

But now I realize I better just save up and get a real one I'll be happy with, I've been using mechanical all my life I won't miss what I don't have 🙂
