It seems the iphone is about the same price, or even cheaper. I dont want it to use for phone calls, just music/movies. I imagine it may have a better resell value, when Im thru with it. Any pro/cons to doing this?

The 32GB iPod Touch (which should see an update around September, they do it every year) costs $399.

The 32GB iPhone costs $299 (with 2 year agreement on AT&T). To get it out of contract you have to pay I think $599 for the phone.

If you just want music and movies, get the iPod Touch. If at any point you might want GPS, or a built in mic for memos, or the camera, spend the $200 extra and get the 3GS out of contract.

In september, the thinking is that the Touch will be getting a camera, and possibly a built in mic.

Uggg, and probably a higher price point.

The iphone I found was $300 on a forum, for sale. Locked, but I dont care because I am not going to be using it as a phone. The touch's Ive seen, are also around $300, on ebay. I wouldnt mind having a camera on it, or the GPS (would that work with no contract) so the iphone is appealing. Even though its a bit bigger.

Ive got a 16gb 1st gen touch I bought last year before going to Iraq. I am going to Afghan fairly soon (10 months home, yay) and my 16gb is full. With just music, no room for movies, or the new music I want.

I did not know about this update, just like I didnt know that the first ones would be getting an update.. like the external volume control. But I really want bluetooth. I have bluetooth headphones that I use. I guess Ill try to wait for the update, but dont want to spend $400 again. Thanks for the info.

The iPhone isn't bigger?

The other nice thing about the iPhone is that you can pop in pretty much any SIM card and get cell service wherever you are. Jailbreak it, buy a prepaid SIM (or phone and just pop the SIM), and there you are. Instant local cell service. Might be handy out in the rocky wastelands of Afghanistan. Might even be able to get data service on it too.

$300 for a 32GB iPhone 3GS? There's something extremely fishy about that.

In terms of cost:
iPhone 32GB 3G S - $299 + $70 (1 month service) + $35 (activation) + ($175 early termination fee) = $580
or the iPhone 32GB 3G S - no commitment pricing is $700
iPod Touch 32GB = $370

In terms of features:
iPod Touch
Thinner
Lighter
Cheaper (w/o a contract)
Nike+iPod capability
Less hassle purchasing it

iPhone 3GS
Cell phone capability
Much longer battery life - if not using it for calls and such
3.2MP autofocus digital camera
video recording and editing capability
GPS
Digital compass (somewhat handy with the GPS)
Faster CPU - faster load times on games and better responsiveness overall
256MB More RAM - faster load times on games and better responsiveness overall
Voice memo capability
Voice control - "play playlist classical", "shuffle", etc.

Yes, the phone is bigger. I think thats what I said, maybe not too clearly.

I didnt know about the sim card, or the jail breaking. Ive heard about it, but since I didnt have one, didnt read too much about it. We had a sat phone last time, got to use it once a week. A real phone would be nice, but I dont think I would allow my guys to use one, so I cant be a hypocrite and use one either.

Thanks for breaking this down.

I dont have to have an S model. I forget which forums, it was either these or HardOCP, but I saw a 3G for $300, 32gb. Maybe I was mistaken. Would the compass and GP work without being connected? I dont think so. The longer battery life would be nice. The better gaming, and voice control would be sweet too.

Is there any prototypes floating around with the new 32gb touch, and concrete details on the updates?

Thanks for the replies. Its still a few months (Dec) before we start our work up.

What about the new Creative, Zii EGG? Looks interesting.

To the best of my knowledge there wasn't a 32GB 3G, just the 3GS in that capacity.

The GPS and Compass should still work without a contract. Certainly the compass. The GPS might not bas as accurate since I think that it is an aGPS (assisted GPS) meaning that it can also triangulate off of cell towers and their known positions to get a fix.

It is an apple product, we don't know what details are concrete until they announce it.

There is no iPhone 3G 32GB. The sizes for the iPhone 3G are 8GB and 16GB. Last week, I sold my neighbors iPhone 3G 16GB used for $395 (inc. shipping) on Ebay. $300 for a 16GB 3G iPhone would be a good price. For a 32GB iPhone 3G S, the going rate on Ebay is upwards of $700.

Yes, they should work fine. I just put my iPhone 3G S in airplane mode (cell phone off) and turned off WiFi and can verify that the compass works just fine. The GPS looked like it was working but it was hard to tell. I don't have an offline GPS program (I'm using xGPS right now and that needs Google Maps) so I can't test it perfectly, but I'm pretty confident that it will work with an offline GPS as a navigator without any cell or internet connection

There are no prototypes floating around that I know of. As TheStu mentioned, Apple is obsessive about secrecy (as evidenced by the suicide at Foxconn last week) and the rumors are typically vague about new iPod Touches. The rumors are for a launch in Sept with a Touch with a camera and a microphone.

That clears it up then. Ill try and wait a few weeks and see if it comes out in Sept. Id like the camera, but dont have to have it. I carried a camera last time, Im sure I will this time too.

Thanks again for all the replies, and help.
